Grade Prep Report

Science Language Experiences

Our Language Experience writing sessions have taken on an exciting science twist this term as we have explored various physical reactions using different materials.

We have enjoyed investigating colours by making beautiful rainbows using skittles and we have loved mixing different substances to create our very own erupting volcanoes!

The Preps predicted, questioned, observed and recorded their findings through pictures and writing.

Rainbow Skittles experiment:

This super sweet Skittles experiment was the perfect way to learn about diffusion. We enjoyed designing various patterns on a plate using the skittles and we predicted what would happen when the warm water was added. The Skittles are coated with sugar and food colouring and the water dissolves the sugar and releases the food colouring which then slowly diffuses through the water.

Volcano experiment:

Our excitement was in overdrive when the explosive volcano experiment taught us about acids and bases. We enthusiastically explored scientific concepts like cause and effect by mixing vinegar with baking soda to get a natural (and non-toxic) chemical reaction—plus bubbles galore!
