Breaksea House News

As Term Two unfolds, Breaksea is buzzing with energy, and a flurry of activities. From sports achievements to cultural excursions and rec activities, there's no shortage of accomplishments and experiences for our students to embrace.

One of the highlights during the holidays was undoubtedly the Art Trip to Paris, an adventure that promised to be both enriching and inspiring for the lucky participants. Lily, Xanthe, Amber, Tilly and McKayla embarked on a journey to the heart of the art world, ready to immerse themselves in the beauty and history of Parisian art and culture.

Accompanied by dedicated teachers, these students explored iconic landmarks such as the Louvre, home to thousands of masterpieces including the Mona Lisa. They strolled along the picturesque streets of Montmartre, where the likes of Picasso and Van Gogh once roamed, drawing inspiration from the vibrant atmosphere and artistic legacy of the neighbourhood.

Here is what Xanthe O’Neill one of Breaksea's talented Artists said about the trip;

During the April school holidays, I had the amazing opportunity to go on the Paris Tour. We were lucky enough to spend nine days exploring the beautiful City of Love. We saw Cathedrals, palaces, churches and so many historical, gorgeously architectural monuments. Of course, we had to visit the icons of Paris; the Eiffel Tower, Monet’s gardens, the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre, as well as other famous tourist attractions. I found experiences such as the bike rides, cruise on the river Sein, Moulin Rouge and walking tours fascinating and inspirational. Our lovely all-girls group had no struggles fitting into the Parisian, fashionista lifestyle (although not always styling the most practical outfits). We took on challenges like navigating crowded Metro, trying new foods like snails (surprisingly good) and a special mention to our soldier, Tilly Norrish, for braving so much salad and fruit while we enjoyed pastries and gourmet dinners (turns out Paris isn’t very dairy-free friendly). We attempted to speak some French although most conversations followed a similar pattern,

“Bonjour!” … “en anglais s'il vous plait” .

This translates to “hello!” ... “In English please?”. Overall, I found the experience eye-opening, and I struggled to put into words how much I enjoyed it. Although we were tired at the end of every action-packed day the 18-hour flights each way were exhausting. The time was well spent, and we didn’t waste a minute of the nine days we were there. All I can say is sorry (potentially you’re welcome) to Mum and Dad for all the trips you’ll have to make to Paris to come to see me… because I will be moving there!

In the realm of athletics, Mariella from Year Eleven has secured an impressive second place in the Cross Country event, while Lysbeth of Year Twelve finished fifth - a testament to their dedication and perseverance in the face of stiff competition.

Beyond the sporting arena, Amy, Brianna, Tiffany and Lily represented boarding in the ANZAC Day parade, honouring the legacy of those who have served their country with courage and sacrifice.

Breaksea has had a mini facelift! New cushions and dining chairs along with some rearranging of furniture has created a more harmonious aesthetic and environment for our students.

Birthdays

April is a big birthday month. We celebrated several members of our community, including students and staff alike, Chloe, Faith, Rif and Lily, Phoebe (our Saturday Supervisor) and our youngest member, Anika, turning two. Each birthday is a chance to come together to celebrate, and share moments of joy!

Amidst the excitement and festivities, it's essential not to lose sight of academic responsibilities. With assessment time looming, students are feeling the pressure to perform, but it's crucial to remember to prioritise well-being and self-care. Whether it's seeking help when needed, managing time effectively, or simply ensuring a good night's sleep, cultivating healthy learning habits is key to success both inside and outside the classroom. This term Breaksea is offering relaxations in the Zen Den! (Fish Bowl) after prep for those wanting to relax and unwind. We highly encourage everyone to try it at least once in the hope they will learn some relaxation techniques that will assist their well-being.

What more appropriate way to sign off than say, namaste!
