5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News

Welcome back to Term 2, we have certainly hit the ground running from week one this term. Looking at our key dates, it's already shaping up to be an action packed term in Grade 5/6! Our students have all returned settled and ready to learn.

Congratulations to our Young Leaders for presenting such a fabulous and moving ANZAC day service for our school community, each of our leaders represented our school with pride and honour and our remaining students watched on and listened with such respect, we are so proud of you all.

Please note we have lots of sporting events happening this term in Grades 5/6. To support this we have again started out 3 strikes policy to reward students who display our 3 R's of respect, responsibility and resilience. All students are aware of this.

For your information a strike is given if:

A student is sent out of the classroom for poor behaviour

                                           OR

A phone call is made home to parents for poor behaviour

3 strikes and a student does not go to the next sporting event that is available to them.

Please note a suspension is an automatic not going to the next event that is available to them. We will communicate all strikes with families through a phone call as they happen.

Please check key dates below all upcoming events.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term is called Museums in Motion and throughout this unit, students will be learning about Australia's historical events and people who have influenced and shaped our country. We will be investigating and researching the colonisation of Australia, the effect of this on Indigenous Australians, the gold rush, migration, famous Australian people and finally, we will be showcasing all of this in a museum expo.  To support this, we are asking families to send in any empty shoe boxes they have at home for students to use to make a diorama.  These can be sent in any time and stored ready for use.

Community Anzac Day Ceremonies

As school captain I was asked to do a speech about what is Anzac Day and what it means to me. I used my school holidays to write my speech. This was not easy but when I had finished I felt confident about it and proud. Then my Pa gave me his Grandfather's war medal to wear at the ceremony. I had to wake up early on ANZAC Day to read at the dawn service. I was really nervous as there were so many people. After I read my speech, it all felt surreal to represent the Tongala Primary School and the ANZAC's. Then I had to go to the 10am march and read as well. I felt like I did an awesome job and I was really proud to be a school captain of our amazing school.

Community Events

We are pleased to say our highly regarded Community events will be up and running again this term. Our students are super keen to participate and this is highly regarded amongst our cohort of students. They will again be invited by Mr Hogan to go down to GTS Hardware store to work as a team to unpack the stock, learn new skills and of course share a hot chocolate for their hard earned work.

Sporting Events

Please keep an eye on Key Dates in our newsletter and Compass for any sporting events. We do have quite a few events happening this term so please be sure to submit any Compass notes on time.

Our first event kicks off next Friday 9th May with the Soccer tournament in Moama. Our students love playing Soccer for Huff and Puff and we are sure their wonderful skills will be on display next Friday. Parents and friends are welcome to attend any of our sporting events. Please be reminded that parents should prioritize their childs enjoyment at these events and not focus on the winning or losing. Inappropriate behaviour is not tolerated at any school event and anyone found to be negatively impacting any of these events will be asked to leave.
