Visual Art

Year 10 Art

Students have been studying Australian modern painters and looking carefully at their use of materials, techniques and processes before developing their own artworks from influences. Students paid homage to Jeffery Smart and Fred Williams by recreating one of their artworks. They are in the process of developing a final artwork.

Year 10 Vis Comm – Term 1

After brushing up on our skills in observational drawing and two-point perspective, we learned how to use the isometric and orthogonal drawing methods to create technical drawings for an object just like the professionals. We then did a deep dive into the wonderful world of typography learning all about its history, classifications and use as an expressive design element. With our new-found knowledge, we created book covers for our fictitious autobiographies, paying close attention to the font we used for our book title ensuring it matched an aspect of our personality or identity. To round out the term, we used the design process to develop a unique stencil that we will then use with screen printing to apply to a tote bag. We practiced first with the dry brush method on paper and we’ll finish up with screen printing at the start of Term 2.

Students in Unit 1 Art Making and Exhibiting have explored a variety of artforms this term. They have completed a drawing folio task where they investigated the practices of Australian Artists of their choice, focusing on the techniques and processes applied in the artworks. Students developed a variety of ideas using the studied artists as inspiration before delving into the art making process by developing trails while experimenting with materials techniques and processes explored in the artform of drawing to create a final folio drawing.

In the still life painting workshop students developed warm up drawings, before experimenting with developing study artworks. These included a range of teacher lead exercises to enhance the develop of skills through techniques. Students created a black and white study and focused on capturing the light and darkness in their chosen composition. Students explored a variety of cool and warm colour paint palettes as they completed the workshop activities.  Students should be happy with their skill development as the artworks are great experiments and show a variety of techniques that they could use in future works.

In the tree painting challenge workshop students were shown a variety of artworks that explored the same subject matter by other artists. Students were tasked to recreate the trees using the same style and techniques.

Term one has been very busy in the Year 9 Ceramics room. Students have been exploring the ceramic hand-building methods of pinch pots and coiling.  Group 01 made pinch pot monsters and demonstrated their creativity and flair for adding features to their pinch pot before exploring and decorating these with underglaze. The finished pieces looked fantastic and featured in an earlier newsletter. Group 03 made pinch pot birds, these too looked great, and the glazing applied took the ceramic birds to the next level thinking about adding texture as a decorative element as well as colour.

Both groups have created gift pots where they explore the elements of colour and shape to create a patterned design. This enabled them to refine their pinch pot forming skills and focus on ensuring the clay was even. Currently students are building coiling techniques to construct a basic and elaborate pots.

They have also researched and presented information about contemporary ceramic artists; they investigated how the artists use clay in their current practice. Hopefully students found the assignment worthwhile and relevant to their ceramic studies.

In Visual Art, our year 8 students have been busy developing their portrait skills by completing a variety of skill-building activities to draw facial expressions. They have experimented with a range of media and techniques to add interest to their celebrity portrait drawings, exploring shading, colour, texture, and proportion to create realistic and expressive artworks.

In Visual Language this term, the Year 7 students have been busy developing their painting skills, focusing on colour mixing and the application of tints and shades. They have explored blending primary colours to create secondary and tertiary colours, deepening their understanding of colour theory. Through hands-on experimentation, they have refined their ability to control tone, contrast, and composition, applying these techniques to their own creative artworks.
