Principal Update

Sarah Rose, Principal

What better way to wrap up the term then with a solid turnout of families to Parent Teacher Conferences.  It’s always great to see the connections between home and school made stronger through the discussions that occur at these face-to-face sessions.  I’ve no doubt that although we’ve all been on a learning curve this term, that the introduction of Compass in supporting our learning and teaching program and student management has seen improvements to our communication, greater visibility to parents/carers as to what their children are working on and the ease in which bookings for PT conferences can be made aided the uptake in attendance at these sessions today.

Term 1 has been packed with opportunities for students in and outside the classroom, many of which you can read about in this edition, including our Year 9 RAID program who have been experiencing many of the attractions Melbourne city has to offer, our excursion to the Avalon International Airshow and the Victoria Youth Leadership Conference to name a few.  Here are a couple of review from Year 7 students after their first term of secondary schooling.

This year l started Gisborne Secondary College. So far this term it has been the best term ever, learning everyone names and making lots of friends. l am very excited to meet all my new teachers. I just found out that l am student representative class captain and l was very excited that l could help Miss Bishop with lots of things. l have had lots of fun at this school and that’s all that matters. My favourite subject is music because l have one of the most loyal and nicest teacher ever in music. l have been learning how to play the piano but it has been really frustrating because it was my first time. l have been really enjoying it the one thing l don’t like is when everyone goes loud because some people like me like learning music.

Throughout Year seven so far, we have had the opportunity to do some amazing things. At the start of this term, we went to fun fields and had a wonderful time. We were all waiting anxiously for camp, but sadly it got postponed. We all enjoy playing and talking with our friends during our breaks. P.E is a fan favourite for most students. Learning and playing different sports with our friends is the best. Walking to our next lesson, being in the lockers with our friends, sitting next to them in class, is awesome. Having fun lessons in each period makes school enjoyable. Nothing makes me want to go to school more than having all my favourite subjects in one day and my friends.

As we wrap up Term 1, I would like to show my appreciation to the incredible teachers and education support staff we have at GSC, and thank them for their work in providing such a high standard of teaching and learning programs across the college.

As I look ahead, Term 2 is always a really busy term of activities.  Early in the Term we will commemorate ANZAC Day with our whole-school assembly on the 24th April.  The College will also be involved in both the Mt Macedon Dawn Service and Gisborne Service on ANZAC Day.  We will also have our whole-school Athletics Carnival, the Yr 11 Debutante Ball's, many more camps, excursions and sporting teams out and about, the GAT for our VCE students, and our Year 10s heading out on Work Experience.

Please be advised that I will be on leave for the first three weeks of Term 2.  Russell Wigginton, Assistant Principal Junior School will be Acting Principal during this time.  We will start next term with a short week, with Monday 21st April being a public holiday for Easter Monday and Friday 25th April a public holiday for ANZAC Day.

I wish you all a safe, happy and rejuvenating term break and Easter.

Kind Regards,
