WANT TO JOIN THE POLICE FORCE?

I recently attended a Career Practitioner’s information session on careers with Victoria Police. The police force is an organisation with over 22,000 staff across 350 locations and offers opportunities to work in a variety of roles.

You might be familiar with the flashing lights and blasting sirens during a high-speed car chase and detectives scouring crime scenes surrounded by tape, however policing is far more than that.

General Officers also work in units that investigate crime trends, like organised crime, conduct covert and search rescue operations, practice law etc.  Policing can also involve roles as a Protective Services Officer, Police Custody Officer or Public Servant employee.  The tables below provide further details on these careers.

There are also various specialist units within Victoria Police.

There are 8 steps in the recruitment process (see diagram below) and it’s important to understand these and in particular to gain knowledge on what Victoria Police look for in their applicants.

Victoria Police’s HOT TIPS for applicant success is to –

  • Research!
  • Check & clean social media
  • Plan! Any upcoming holidays or changes to circumstances?
  • Make sure application is competitive and be careful of grammar, spelling and sentence structure
  • Minding manners and respond asap!
  • Prepare! Think of examples using the STAR method (see school’s Careers Coordinator for information if needed)

For students applying straight out of school, Victoria Police value experience/transferable skills gained from –

  • Work Experience
  • Volunteering
  • Sporting & Hobbies
  • Leadership Roles
  • Experience of different cultures and ways of living
  • Keeping up with current events

Prior to applying, applicants can also take an eligibility & suitability quiz.

Victoria Police have announced some important changes to eligibility requirements and these are detailed below –

Below is an example of how a Bachelor of Criminology degree is linked to entering the Police Force without sitting the entrance exam. Exemption from the entrance exam also applies to applicants who have completed their VCE or equivalent in Australia within the last five years and obtained an ATAR of 65 and a minimum score of 25 in English or have completed a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an arts, science, humanities, business or law discipline in Australia, New Zealand or United Kingdom.

Regardless of your year level, it’s never too early to start researching what a career as a Police Officer would entail.  Over the next couple of months Victoria Police are running several career information sessions.  If you are keen on a Vic Police career I strongly encourage you to attend one of these sessions.
