Junior and Middle Level Leaders Report

Beginning Of Term 1:

Year 7 and 8 Leader Report

Year 7

Lights, Camera, Audience! When the curtain rises on a game show, it's more than just entertainment—it's a microcosm of Australian cultural diversity and media production. Being part of the studio audience on the Channel 9 show, Tipping Point we could physically understand the TV production process.

We could identify different representations from the host and the studio audience to the crew, we were even reminded to consider the home viewers too. Some people in the audience and those who were to be contestants on the show, had traveled from rural Victoria or even interstate arriving at 4:00 am on the morning of the shoot, demonstrating the magnetic pull of live television and the universal language of our shared excitement. Our episode will not air until September-ish, but will be notified and we will let you know.

We discovered how many moving parts it takes (get it, "take one, take two")  to create an episode with electrifying audience engagement.

Our diverse group of students joined a diverse studio audience — representing Victoria's rich multicultural landscape — we became active participants in media production.  We weren't just watching a game show; we were creating media, transforming raw energy into a narrative that would eventually reach thousands of living rooms across Australia

We were trained in how to clap, how to "ohhhh" and "ahhhh" and even how high we should be clapping. Clap at eye level, to allow the camera to capture our response, so the home audience get a sense of our experience which in turn encourages an emotional response as if they were on set with us. We got an understanding that our reactions aren't just spontaneous responses, but carefully crafted emotional signals that translate through camera lenses to viewers at home!

This term, Year 8 students have embraced a range of learning experiences, extracurricular activities, and personal growth opportunities. A key focus has been the safe use of devices, ensuring students develop responsible digital habits. We have also taken time to celebrate student success, recognising those who have excelled in their studies, demonstrated positive behaviour through HRRRT points, and achieved 100% attendance.

Attendance and punctuality remain a major priority. Being at school every day and arriving on time is essential for academic progress, social development, and overall success. Missing even one lesson can impact learning, and arriving late disrupts not only the student but also the entire class. We encourage all students to commit to consistent attendance and punctuality to make the most of their education.

This term has been packed with exciting events, including inter-school sports, the swimming carnival, Harmony Week celebrations, and the Walkathon, where students demonstrated school spirit, teamwork, and inclusivity.

Looking ahead, we have some fantastic opportunities coming up, including the Year 8 "Knowledge Conquers All" program and Medieval Day, where students will immerse themselves in hands-on historical learning.

I would like to sincerely thank the staff, parents, students, and school community for warmly welcoming me into South Oakleigh College. Your support, kindness, and collaboration have made my transition into the Year 8 Level Leader role so enjoyable and rewarding.

As Term 1 comes to a close, we encourage students to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy an exciting holiday break. We look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for an incredible Term 2!

Year 9 and 10 Leader Report

As Term 1 comes to a close, we would like to take a moment to commend our Middle School students for their smooth transition into the new school year. It has been wonderful to see students settling into their routines, embracing new challenges, and demonstrating a strong commitment to their learning. We have also greatly appreciated the warm welcome we have received from both students, parents and the school community. It has been a pleasure getting to know you all, and we look forward to continuing to support you throughout the year.

We would like to acknowledge the majority of students who have consistently worn the correct uniform and taken pride in representing South Oakleigh College. As a reminder, if you are ever unable to wear the full school uniform, please ensure you have a signed note from home explaining the reason. Additionally, we encourage all students to arrive at school and to their classes on time each day. Being punctual not only shows respect for your learning but also ensures you are making the most of every opportunity available to you.

A special congratulations goes to Sharon Biju Koshy in Year 9 for his outstanding achievement in being selected to represent Australia in the IBERCUP Football Tournament in Portugal this December. This is an incredible opportunity, and we are all very proud of him.

As we approach the holiday break, we encourage all students to reflect on the great effort they have shown this term and continue to build on this progress in Term 2. We wish you and your families a happy, safe, and restful holiday. See you all next term!
