Student Leadership Conference

On Thursday April 3, the Senior School student leaders and house captains travelled to the University of South Australia in Mount Gambier to attend the GRIP Student Leadership Conference. GRIP is an organisation that provides leadership training for school students across Australia.

At the conference, our student leaders had the opportunity to reflect on their roles and explore how they can contribute to making our school an even better place for others. They also learned about the key responsibilities of student leadership and how to implement positive change within the school community.

The main sessions were engaging, interactive, and filled with valuable insights. Following these, students participated in workshops that expanded on the ideas presented in the keynote sessions, allowing them to develop practical strategies for their leadership journey.

I look forward to working alongside our student leadership team as they apply what they have learned to benefit our school.

Year 8 Humanities

On Monday March 31st, the Year 8 students headed out on a field trip to complete a field sketch of the volcanic landscape at Tower Hill, accompanied by Mrs Van Leerdam, Mr Zeunert, and Bus driver Mr Haworth.

The day was pleasantly sunny, but the wind did pose some challenges for students trying to keep their paper still while drawing on it, and trying to keep their hats on at the same time.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to see this iconic local landscape in a new way, observing and discussing the different features formed by volcanic activity and how they came to be.

Year 9 Courses

Students in Year 9 participated in a Barista Course on Monday 24th March where they learnt the art of Coffee making.

Following this, students were involved in a First Aid and CPR course run by Summit First Aid on 31st March. Students successfully learnt how to give First Aid to others while learning to work together to look for solutions.

Year 9/10 Outdoor Education

Year 9/10 Outdoor Education students went to Tower Hill on 2nd April to undertake their Orienteering Assessment. Put into teams of three, their task was to navigate Tower Hill using a map and compass to find the flags set out in the area. It was a beautiful day with lots of animals and fun involved.

Year 11 Maths

This week, our Year 11 Mathematical Methods students took their learning beyond the classroom with a graph scavenger hunt around the school. As part of their study of graphs and functions, students searched for real-life examples of six key graphs: straight line, parabola, hyperbola, truncus, circle, and square root.

With cameras in hand, students explored the campus, capturing images of everything from the linear football posts to the truncus shape of our climbing frame. A water fountain provided the perfect example of a parabola, while a Basketball's markings revealed the surprising appearance of a hyperbolic graph.

This hands-on activity encouraged students to see maths in their everyday environment, reinforcing how graphs help model our surroundings. Their discoveries sparked insightful discussions back in class, proving that mathematical concepts are all around us - if you know where to look!

VCE Field Trips

On Tuesday 1st April, two separate VCE classes attended field trips to South West Health Care in Warrnambool.

The Unit 3/4 Business Management class attended SWHC first and were spoken to by the Human Resource Manager. They learnt about the employment life cycle and the challenges and rewards of managing employees from a wide range of careers.

Later in the day, the Unit 3/4 Work Related Skills class were guided through the facility and discovered that there are 135 different roles at SWHC and were given an insight into the different skills and qualifications required to get a job in this organisation. They learnt that SWHC is the largest employer in our region, with over 2000 employees.

Food Tech

It’s been a bustling week in the Food Tech room!

Our Year 6 students had a special collaboration with the Wood Tech group, coming together to bake delicious muffins for the students who remained at school while their classmates participated in the Athletics event. It was wonderful to see teamwork in action and everyone enjoying their time in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, the Year 7's got hands-on making hearty Meatball subs, filling the room with mouth-watering aromas.

The Year 8's took on the challenge of making Sausage Rolls, with Breanna adding a creative twist by crafting delicate pastry bows.

Well done to everyone. I look forward to hearing what you make in the holidays.
