Year 8 Science

Our Year 8 students have been learning different separating techniques in Science recently, covering everything from particle sizes to experimenting using Chromatography, Filtering and Decanting, Magnetism and Evaporation and Crystallisation. The Year 8’s are thinking back to year 7 and using their basic lab skills to separate a large amount of substances from each other. This all leads into their final summative task that will be held in the last week of school where the students will be given a mystery solution that they need to separate. We are very excited to see what they can end up achieving at the end of term.

Year 9 Science

Last week Miss Thomson’s Year 9 Core Science class were exploring the Atom. They were learning all this atomic structure and looked at positively and negatively charged objects. The class undertook a practical where they needed to rub a piece of fabric against a PVC pipe to charge it. They then used Styrofoam, tin foil and water to observe the effects the charged PVC pipe would have. They saw some magic happen with the water when is started to bend towards the PVC and found it very difficult to remove the Styrofoam when it became attached.

The class had a blast and are very excited for their next practical lesson.
