Auslan

Auslan at Ormond Primary School
Students and staff at Ormond Primary School are embracing another year of Auslan learning, steadily building their confidence and skills in Australian Sign Language across the school.
In classrooms, students have been learning how to sign greetings, introduce themselves, and use everyday words and phrases. Along the way, they are discovering that communication in Auslan involves far more than just hands. Facial expression, body language, and respectful attention all play an important role. Staff have also been learning alongside students, modelling curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to try something new as we grow our skills together.
Learning Auslan is strengthening our school’s commitment to inclusion by helping students recognise and value different ways people communicate. It also supports the development of empathy, confidence, and a richer understanding of Deaf culture.
We look forward to continuing our Auslan journey throughout the year and sharing our progress with the community. Be sure to ask your child to show you some of the signs they have learned - you may find yourself learning alongside them!
