Year Six

Dear Year Six Community,

Wow! It's incredible that we're just two weeks away from the end of the term! Crazy how quickly time is flying by. It's truly remarkable how swiftly the weeks are whizzing by, filled with a whirlwind of activities and events that enrich our school community. As we reflect on the journey thus far, it's evident that each day brings new opportunities for growth and learning.

Literacy

In Reading and Writing, students have been exploring the power of figurative language seeing how literary elements like alliteration, metaphors, and similes can give their poems depth and feeling. They also explored Found Poetry, a creative form of expression that involves repurposing existing texts to craft something entirely new. Through this, students have gained a deeper appreciation and understanding for the power of words and the endless possibilities they offer in storytelling and artistic expression.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students are exploring the numbers and use of operations and learning how to solve them by selecting efficient calculation strategies and clearly explaining their solutions. Understanding operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division helps students develop problem-solving skills applicable to real-life situations. Using mathematical thinking through clear explanations and reasoning helps students for deeper understanding and confidence in problem-solving.

Inquiry

Our students worked on unpacking our inquiry within the Transdisciplinary Theme of 'Who We Are.' They have inquired into a line into the influence of our emotions on our behaviour. Through reflective activities and discussions, they were encouraged to identify and articulate the myriad of emotions they encounter daily.

Central to our inquiry is the concept of regulating emotions. Our students explored strategies for managing their feelings in healthy and constructive ways. Whether it's taking deep breaths, practising mindfulness, or seeking support from trusted adults, our students are building a toolkit for emotional well-being that will serve them well into adulthood.

Beach program

Beyond the classroom, our students had an incredible experience participating in our annual Beach Program, hosted by the Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club. They took part in a range of activities, including swimming, running, board paddling, and wading, all while having a fantastic time. More importantly, they developed essential beach safety skills, learning how to identify rip currents and understand key life-saving techniques.

We are immensely proud of our Year 6 students for demonstrating enthusiasm, resilience, and open-mindedness throughout the program. They not only strengthened their water safety knowledge but also embodied the learner profile attributes of being risk-takers and reflective thinkers!

Reminders

  • Hats & Water Bottles: As the weather remains warm in Term 1, students should bring their hats and water bottles each day.

  • Charged Devices: Please ensure all student devices are fully charged at home and ready for use in the classroom.

      Kind regards,

    Year Six Team
