Year Five

It’s hard to believe we are already nearing the end of Term One! The weeks have flown by, and Year Five Students have been working hard across all areas of learning. With NAPLAN now completed, we encourage families to check in with their children about their learning.

Literacy

The Year Five Students have been busy developing their literacy skills in both reading and writing. They have been practicing comprehension using the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy, helping them to better understand and analyse texts. In writing, students have been revising persuasive and narrative pieces in preparation for their NAPLAN assessments, focusing on refining their structure, language, and persuasive techniques. Additionally, they have begun linking their new Unit of Inquiry by exploring global leaders, reading about their impact, and discussing the qualities that make them influential figures in history and society.

Maths

In Maths, the Year Five students have been revising key concepts in measurement and data to strengthen their understanding in preparation for NAPLAN. They have been working on interpreting and representing data accurately, as well as refining their skills in measuring length, area, and volume.  Students have also begun participating in LED (Launch, Explore, Discuss) lessons, where they engage with open-ended mathematical tasks. These lessons encourage students to explore different problem-solving strategies, justify their reasoning, and discuss their thinking with peers, helping to deepen their mathematical understanding and critical thinking skills.

Inquiry

Students began to unpack our first unit of inquiry through the sphere of the Transdisciplinary Theme of 'Who We Are.' They embarked upon a line of inquiry into how the characteristics of a leader may determine their legacy. Students explored the different roles of a leader in everyday life. They also examined how the attributes of a leader impact their ability to do their role, as well as how leaders influence change and leave a legacy. By considering leadership attributes, leaders’ legacy, and their roles and responsibilities, students were able to begin formulating questions framed by the learner attributes of being Principled, Open-Minded and Reflective.
