Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,

We hope everyone has been enjoying their child/ren coming home and sharing their learning with you. Over the past few weeks, students have been gearing up for their first ever NAPLAN assessment. It was fascinating to witness the growth and maturity displayed by students during the assessments. They demonstrated exemplary self-management skills by being punctual and well organised.

Reading

In Reading, students have been developing key comprehension skills to strengthen their understanding of texts. They have been learning to scan for key information, answer questions based on evidence from the text, and ask meaningful questions to deepen their understanding.

As part of our reading journey, we have also introduced a class novel, which has sparked wonderful discussions. Students are learning to ask questions before, during, and after reading to enhance their comprehension and connect ideas to their own experiences. Through rich conversations and shared reflections, they are building confidence in their ability to engage with texts thoughtfully and critically.

By focusing on these essential reading skills, students are becoming more independent readers who can think deeply about what they read and express their ideas with confidence.

We are excited to continue this journey and look forward to seeing their love for reading grow!

Writing

In Writing, students have continued working on persuasive texts and following the writing process, each day students have followed a sequence starting with drafting, editing and revising then publishing. Students were given a prompt, then encouraged to use the O.R.E.O structure to plan their writing piece. Students have also been working on Narratives, they were also prompted with a picture to get a visualisation. Students have been writing some fantastic sizzling starters when including character, setting, problem and solution in their writing. They have also been using a variety of word choice and descriptive language such as adjectives. We also spent some time crafting and working on our Writer’s Notebook during non-NAPLAN time to let the students take a break after testing periods.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been exploring statistics and probability, focusing on chance, data representation, and interpretation. They have enjoyed identifying possible outcomes and collecting data through experiments and surveys, using tables and tally charts to record their findings. Students were then challenged to represent the data using pictographs and column graphs, learning to incorporate key features into their graphs. Additionally, they had the opportunity to interpret data displays and compare the similarities and differences between various types of data presentations. Students have also actively practised NAPLAN-style questions as part of our ‘Explicit Teaching’ sessions.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been encouraged to explore how key concepts such as beliefs, values, influence, culture, and identity connect to both their personal experiences and the larger global context. They were then guided to identify areas of interest to investigate and provided with opportunities to gather facts through research. Students collaborated with their peers, sharing opinions and reflecting on each other's findings to deepen their investigations. We will begin looking at how our family and cultural beliefs shape our sense of self and sharing these insights with the class to foster an appreciation and understanding of diverse cultures.

Important Reminders

Hat and Hydration Policy:

  • Bring and wear their wide brim hat at every break time

  • Carry a full water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated

Technology and Preparation:

  • Please ensure iPads are fully charged before bringing them to school

  • Students should arrive prepared and ready to learn

Additionally, our school day begins at 8:30am, with classroom doors opening at 8:20am. This early access allows students time to settle in and prepare for their learning. This is a crucial time of the day that prepares students for a successful and engaging day.

If a student arrives after 8:40am, they must sign in at the school office and obtain a late pass. This helps us maintain accurate attendance records and minimise classroom disruption.

Kind Regards,

Year Three Teaching Team
