Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,
Our Year Two students have been working hard over the past few weeks to learn all that they can in each curriculum area. We have recently launched our homework routines, which includes daily reading and spelling. We appreciate your support in helping your child develop positive learning habits at home and we look forward to an exciting term of learning, growth and discovery.
Reading
In Reading, we have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of 'Making Connections'. Students have been making connections to different mentor texts using their prior knowledge and personal experiences. Students have listened to a variety of texts, such as 'The Cranky Bear' and 'Beach Day' and have used their own experiences and prior knowledge to connect to these texts. Students have continued with Reader’s Theatre this week. Through Reader’s Theatre, students have been practising their reading fluency whilst working cooperatively in small groups to perform the text to the class. Our Year Two students have enjoyed these reading experiences in class.
Spelling
In Spelling, students have continued to learn their oxford words each week. Students are encouraged to consolidate this learning at home through their weekly homework tasks. Students have learnt about the vowel digraphs of 'ee', 'ea' and 'oo'. Vowel digraphs are when two letters come together to spell one sound. Students have been practising words that have these sounds and completing activities linked to the sound learnt each week.
Writing
In Writing, we have continued with writing Procedural Texts. This week students focused on writing a procedural text linked to our first unit of Inquiry. Students had the opportunity to follow a step-by-step procedure to make paper lanterns and share their experiences through writing. Students also had the opportunity to learn about St.Patrick’s Day and follow a procedural text to create paper craft linked to this celebration. This was a great activity where children were able to express and share with their peers the importance of different celebrations all around the world.
In week 8, students in Year 2 have begun looking at poetry and we look forward to seeing the students grow and deleop in their understanding of this genre.
Maths
In Maths, we have had a strong focus on the Place Value of 3-digit numbers. Students have been exploring how to make, name and record models of 3-digit numbers from 100 to 999. Students have used hundreds, tens and ones blocks to make and record their 3-digit numbers. Students have also learnt how to order and sequence 3-digit numbers from smallest to largest and identify the numbers on a number lin
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been writing procedures of how to make or do something linked to their culture. Students have created a set of questions called 'wonderings' to begin researching information on different cultures, celebrations or traditions. Students will research information over the coming weeks to put together a presentation to present to their families and loved ones at our cultural picnic. Our cultural picnic will be held on Wednesday 26th March at 1:50pm in our school Gym.
