Year One

Dear Year One Community,

What a busy couple of weeks we have had, where the students are continuing to work hard and demonstrate to us that they are principled and balanced Year One students now.

An added excitement was the celebration of Harmony Day, where they enjoyed dressing up in orange or in culturally significant clothing. The colour orange represents Harmony week in Australia, which is a celebration of our country's cultural diversity and promotes inclusiveness and respect. We thank all for the participation as everyone has a role to play!

Thank you for your continued support in assisting your child every day with their homework and returning it to school every Friday. We appreciate your support in helping students to create good study habits and routines.

Reading

In Reading, we have continued making predictions before, during, and after reading to deepen our understanding of the stories we've read. The students have gained a lot more confidence in their predicting and are now practising to justify their predictions.

We have also been working on using our reading strategies to help us decode tricky words. Students have been sliding through words, looking for familiar letter patterns/chunks, using picture clues, looking for small words within words and rereading to make sense of the text. These strategies help build confidence and independence as readers. We encourage you to continue supporting your child at home to make predictions and use their decoding strategies while reading together!

Writing

This week our students have enjoyed being creative through the genre of poetry. They have taken pride in sharing their poems out loud with their classmates.

They have been exploring different types of poetry by writing 'Inside, Outside' and 'Colour' poems. Students began by brainstorming a 'seed idea' in their Writers Notebook before crafting their poems based on these initial thoughts. Using a provided structure, they focused on discussing what they could see inside and outside their classrooms in order to help them write their poems. When writing their colour poems, the students were encouraged to use descriptive language including adjectives. Additionally, the students have been expanding their vocabulary through the practise of Oxford words!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have learnt about number lines and how to use them to help them recognise numbers from 0-120 and beyond. As a part of this investigation the students identified numbers that come before or after a given number, as well as counting patterns. They practiced drawing number lines in various ways, highlighting the importance of equal spacing and counting sequentially.

Maths warm ups have helped engage the students prior to their learning. Games such as 'Tens Frames War' and 'Guess my Number' help practise the skills needed in a fun way.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have continued to work through the different Lines of Inquiry relating to our current Unit. They have been practising recognising the different facial expressions associated with various emotions. They have also been exploring how to manage their emotions in appropriate ways, and how they can respond to the emotions of others in different situations.

Students participated in helping to create a class 'Feelings Thermometer' where they discussed both their physical and emotional feelings, and what this could look and sound like. They also had the opportunity to brainstorm strategies that they could use in the future to manage these different feelings.
