PBL
At SFS, our PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning) school wide expectations are:
Respect,
Responsibility and
Kindness
This week’s PBL lesson continued to focus on RESPONSIBILITY in the LEARNING SPACE: Care for the Environment and Resources.
Here are 3 of our lucky PBL raffle winners from last week who have been spotted demonstrating our school expected behaviours.
SRC
The SRC met with me on Monday afternoon for their 3rd meeting for the year.
The students get a chance to share any ideas of ways to improve the school. We discussed the importance of child safety and the right all children have to come to school and feel safe and be protected.
The SRC reps signed a commitment to child safety. It is important that we have regular conversations about safety with children at home and school, that children understand how they can keep themselves safe, who can help them and what schools need to do to help keep them safe.
We have 11 Child safe standards in Victoria which we need to follow to ensure we keep all students safe.
Our commitment to child safety
The members of the SRC at St Francis de Sales Lynbrook are committed to child safety.
We want children to be safe, happy and empowered.
We support and respect all children, as well as the teachers, staff and volunteers.
We are committed to the safety, participation and empowerment of all children.
The students completed a brief safety audit where we talked about the places at school we do and don’t feel safe and some of the reasons why.
We also talked about the Respectful Relationships curriculum which is a program that promotes the prevention of family violence and teaches students social and emotional skills. The students in the SRC signed a commitment to Respectful Relationships.
St Francis de Sales Lynbrook Statement of Commitment to Respectful Relationships
We commit to implementing a whole-school approach to Respectful Relationships and to help combat family violence in Victoria.
As part of this commitment:
- We will all actively promote gender equality and speak out against gender-based violence in our school and in our community in accordance with our School PBL Expected behaviours.
I discussed with the students during the safety audit the places at school where boys and girls chose to play and why. The students have been asked to collect some data at lunchtime to see how many boys and girls are playing in different parts of the playground.
The students also answered some questions about Respectful relationships and feeling safe such as “My school listens to me” “We respect people at school” and “I can learn about emotions” where students were asked to rate if these things happen at school or not.
Stay tuned for more work in this space this year. The students were respectful in sharing their ideas with the group.
Please join us to celebrate Harmony Week at school on Friday 28th March. We are asking students to wear orange to school on that day or clothes that represent our cultural background. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Wearing something orange during Harmony Week shows support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. The children will be learning about the message during the week. All parents and families are warmly invited to attend a special Harmony Day assembly at school on Friday 28th March in the hall at 2.30pm. Have a conversation with your child and talk about your own family history and cultural background.
Some things you might like to discuss as a family
- Where was your child born? Where were their parents born and grandparents?
- Is another language spoken in your home?
- Are there important traditions that are part of your culture?
- Are there special foods that you eat as part of your cultural background?
- Do you know any interesting facts about the country?
- Have you visited these countries before? If you have what did you like?
If you have any concerns about the mental health or wellbeing of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am available to speak to at school, via the phone or email on rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au
I will be available on the Parent Teacher Interview evening on the last Thursday of Term 1, so please make a time to speak with me on the Interview site where you book in the class teachers if you would like some support for your child or I might be able to help in some way.
