Ag Studies

The hot dry weather continues to impact our horticultural activities at the moment. While we deploy an automatic watering system, we could really do with a good drop of rain to freshen things up a bit and help to finish off our melons and tomatoes.
As mentioned last week, our potato harvest was a great success. They are already being used in Food Technology and the resulting dishes have been delicious! We are close to harvesting the last of our cantaloupe and watermelon and will share these with our students soon.
Normally we would have begun our Autumn planting by now, but the long, hot dry spell has put this on hold for the time being. Hopefully we’ll get a break in the weather before too long.
Finally, we have grown several grape vines around the school from cuttings. The black muscat that is growing along the verandah facing the quadrangle has been particularly pleasing. It began the season as a bare stem, less than a metre in height. With careful pruning and training it has grown up to roof height and extended 12 metres along the verandah. Even though it is in a high traffic area and quite accessible, the students have allowed the vine to grow undisturbed and have shown great respect to the vine and the effort that went into ensuring its growth.
