Auslan

Preps: A Great Start!

Our Prep students have settled in beautifully and are eager to learn Auslan. They have been introduced to signing school supplies and are quickly picking up new vocabulary. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm and engagement in the classroom!

Years 1 & 2: Building Sentences

Our Year 1 and 2 students have been developing their ability to form sentences in Auslan. They are confidently using phrases such as:

  • “Where’s my…?”
  • “I have….”
  • “I want….”
  • “I need….”By adding school supplies to their sentences, they are expanding their vocabulary and improving their communication skills. They are also working on making eye contact and strengthening both their receptive and expressive skills.

Years 3-6: Finger-Spelling Fun

Students in Years 3-6 have been participating in a range of activities focused on finger-spelling. They have been practicing both receptively (understanding when others sign) and expressively (signing themselves). Some of the fun games we’ve played include:

  • Chinese Whispers: Passing a finger-spelled word along the line to see if it stays the same!
  • Fly Swat Game: Students quickly identify and swat the correct word card on the floor after receptively watching a finger-spelled word.

We’ve noticed a mix of abilities in finger-spelling, but it’s clear that those who have been practising at home are becoming more fluent and confident. Keep up the great work!

Encouraging Home Practice.  We encourage all students to continue practicing Auslan at home. Even a few minutes each day can make a big difference in their confidence and fluency.

Thank you for supporting your child’s Auslan learning journey!

Happy Signing!
