Industry Spotlight – Interior Architecture and Interior Design

What is the difference between Interior Architecture and Interior Design?

Interior design and interior architecture are closely related fields, yet they have distinct focuses and roles within the design and construction industry.

Interior Design primarily concerns the aesthetic and functional aspects of interior spaces. Interior designers select colour schemes, furniture, lighting, and materials to create environments that are both visually appealing and practical.

  • Space planning to optimise layout and flow.

  • Choosing decorative elements like furnishings and artwork.

  • Ensuring the design aligns with the client's lifestyle and preferences.

While interior designers must understand building codes and regulations, their primary focus is on the look and feel of a space.

Interior Architecture, on the other hand, bridges the gap between architecture and interior design. This discipline involves the design, analysis, and modification of building interiors, considering both structural and aesthetic elements. Interior architects often:

  • Work on the structural aspects of a building's interior, such as walls, floors, and staircases.

  • Focus on the functionality, safety, and sustainability of interior spaces.

  • Collaborate closely with architects and engineers during the building's design or renovation process.

In essence, while interior designers concentrate on decorating and furnishing spaces, interior architects delve deeper into the structural and functional modifications of interior environments.
