Room 1 Years 3 -6

It has been a fantastic and productive week across Years 3–6! Students have been working hard, showing great enthusiasm, and continuing to build their confidence across all learning areas. We are especially proud of the way students are engaging with new concepts and supporting each other in their learning.
Mathematics Focus
In Maths, we’ve been strengthening our understanding of number concepts and building strong learning habits.
We are now starting each lesson with retrieval questions using resources from Ochre. These quick questions help students revisit previously learned concepts, improving memory and confidence over time.
This week, students have been learning about:
- Renaming numbers (for example, understanding that 1,000 can also be represented as 10 hundreds)
- Odd and even numbers, including identifying these within larger numbers
These skills are helping students develop a deeper understanding of how numbers work and how they can be represented in different ways.
Reading & Writing
In English, students have been focusing on building stronger and more engaging writing pieces.
Our learning has included:
- Exploring character traits and how they shape a story
- Learning how to introduce characters through their actions, rather than simply describing them
- Using sensory details (what a character sees, hears, feels, smells, and tastes) to build vivid and interesting settings
Students are beginning to move from “telling” to “showing” in their writing, which is an important step in becoming more expressive and creative writers.
I'm super proud of these pieces this week:
2am in a dark forest slowly creeping and creeking. I can hear shots cracking in the distance, birds rustling through leaves. Deers scraping bark off trees, foxs and wolves chasing each other. Moose scraping antlers on each other.
The rocks rumbling and birds screeching made the desert feel mysterious. The sun was foggy. Two sisters Charlie and Lilly walk in the desert. The map flies away "Oh no."
A spec of dust settled on the ancient head, brittled. After a time unknown to anyone, an orange, low-glowing surface stirred and.... moved. For thousands of years, no sign of life had moved...
Phonics & Spelling
Each morning, we are starting with a phonics review session to strengthen students’ spelling and sound knowledge. These will continue into Term 2.
These sessions focus on:
- Revisiting important spelling patterns
- Practising sounds and word structures
Building confidence in reading and writing unfamiliar words
Consistent practice is helping students become more fluent and accurate in both reading and spelling, which is a current focus area across the school.
As we come towards the end of the term, it’s been great to see how much progress students have made across all areas of their learning. They’ve worked really hard, taken on new challenges, and should feel proud of what they’ve achieved!
