Year 5 & 6
Around our level
As part of our reading program, each class is studying a novel. 5/6A: Black Sunday, 5/6B: Boy Overboard, and 5/6C: Holes. All books are providing rich discussions, new vocabulary, and a variety of themes. As an adult, I have also enjoyed reading these novels. Our author study is Margaret Wild. Her picture story books for senior students are amazing. Books such as ‘The Sloth Who Came to Stay’, ‘Bogtrotter’, ‘Fox’, and ‘The Treasure Box’ just to name a few. The Year 6 students have had fun reminiscing their years at Yarra Road while writing their memories for their Graduation book. Year 5 students have been writing a Christmas story for their Prep buddy. We have been revising the four processes and looking at solving equations using different strategies. Who knew that making the longest paper chain possible involved maths and problem solving? The Year 5 students have commenced their Leadership program. This program looks at skills needed to be a good leader and supports students if they are wanting to apply for a captaincy role for 2026. While this occurs, the Year 6 students have had the opportunity to work together in cooperative learning tasks. However, I think the highlight has been making items for our ‘Bizarre Bazaar’. We have just commenced this process. Students make items to sell to the other students at the school. We will hold our bazaar on Monday the 15th of December. The money raised is going to the Salvation Army.
At our last Assembly, we celebrated students from our level for their personal achievements. We would like to acknowledge them here as well.
The following students competed at the Maroondah and Manningham Division Athletics Championships. They competed against the best from approximately 50 schools.
Jeremy F: 100m
Oliver D: long jump
Zoe R: high jump
Cruze F: high jum
Noah F: shot put and discu
Jordan: hurdles
Jade L: discus
Further congratulations go to Noah F and Cruze F for making it through to the Eastern Region Championships.
Ivy K played in the Under 14s National basketball tournament held in Perth. Her team came 4th in Australia. That is an amazing achievement. She has also received a scholarship to Edinburgh College.
Aisha R and Oscar L have also received academic scholarships to their secondary schools.
If your child has achieved something outside school, such as a scholarship, please let us know, as we can only recognise people if we know about them.
Now onto comments from our students about the last fortnight.

5/6A
This term so far has been really fun, with Buddy stories and the Leadership program. Even though I am not going for one it will still help me with my leadership and my personality traits. I also really liked Bizarre Bazaar because it was fun to get creative and learn Economics in that type of way. So in the end, I have really liked this term so far and I am excited to finish the rest of it.
- Ashleigh J
This term we have done loads of stuff such as Bizarre Bazaar. We have been doing it in Economics. I love doing Bizarre Bazaar. It’s where we make stuff and sell it. So I am very excited for it.
- Jade L
This term, we did our Buddy stories. My buddy is Henri and he loves Minecraft, so I decided to do a Minecraft collab for a Christmas Minecraft Update. We have also done Year 5 Leadership. I wanted to be a House Captain like many other people. One more thing was Bizarre Bazaar. My group are making basketball cards with video game characters on them.
- Jordan V
This term the Year 5 students are doing a Leadership program with Mrs Haysom. I think it is good because it can help us improve and become better leaders next year.
- Xander H

5/6B
It's Term 4 already and I have learned so much! I'm excited because the bizarre bazaar is coming up and I have been working really hard to make my items. I also have been making a gift for my buddy; it's a book! It's a special book because I wrote the words and illustrated the pages. I'm in Year 5 so I am thinking about a leadership role next year. I think I would be great to be a leader and I feel super excited.
- Vodhini C
I am learning how to make a big waterfall model this year with my friend Ollie in science, which has been very fun. And I have been enjoying 5/6 sport and the new sports we are playing.
- Cooper H
I can't wait for the bizarre bazaar. Everyone's things that they are making look so good. Boy Overboard is definitely one of my favourite books.
- Shakira I
When I heard that we were making paperchains for Maths, I was so excited. I just wanted to skip all the other parts to the lesson and start the paperchains.
- Sam S

5/6C
Last Friday we started to work on the bizarre bazaar. This year I am in a group with Aisha and Ashlea. The things we are selling are bracelets and painted CDs. Since last Friday we have already made maybe 6 bracelets. Overall it has started really well!
- Madi E
We have been reading ‘Holes’ as a class and I really enjoyed the book. It was interesting.
- Noah F
In class we are reading Holes. It is a great book and I wish there were more books like it. Stanley was falsely accused of stealing a pair of famous shoes from a baseball player.
- Kade
I really like the book Holes for our Book Study this semester because of how well it made sense at the end. Like how all the random pieces of information given at the start pieced together at the end. That is why this book is so satisfying.
- Oscar L
