Grade 5 Trip to Parliament House

Welcome to Term 4! For the Grade 6s, this will be the most exciting and also the term with a roller coaster of emotions.
As part of our Literacy Block, we have begun our term with two new Serial reads.
The Grade 5s are reading a magical fiction tale by Amelia Mellor - 'The Grandest Bookshop in the World' and creating their own narratives based on the author's ideas.
The Grade 6 students are reading 'Marshfield Dreams' by Ralph Fletcher. This memoir is a great example of how to write an entertaining autobiography, to help them recreate their memories into a speech for the end of graduation.
6A students drafting their own memories for their autobiographies, based on their new serial read.
6A working on their autobiography unit by thinking about their friends and responding to the prompts.
During our Numeracy lessons;
-the Grade 5 students have been learning about 'Location' - Identifying coordinates on the cartesian plan and plotting coordinates of shapes on a cartesian plan.
-the Grade 6 students have been learning about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages - calculating percentages of 50, 25 and 10% and using multiplicaiton and division to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages.
This term the Grade 5/6 Unit of Work is a Civics and Citizenship unit titled 'What is Democracy?'
The students will be learning about what democracy is in Australia and why voting in a democracy is so important, the three different levels of government in Australia and their roles and responsabilites and how laws are developed and enforced in Australia.
We got this unit off with a bang by visiting Parliament House in the city.
This week it was the Grade 5's turn to take the train into the city and visit Parliament House.
Some Grade 6 students have also had the exciting experience of working with an artist to create a new mural in building 2's hallway. Come and have a marvel at our beautiful, colorful new entranceway.
