Design News

Students in the Design subjects (Digital Technology, Foods, and Design Technology) have been busy tackling several creative and challenging projects.

Students in Foods have developed their creativity as they research, plan, create, and reflect on their own home and body care formulas in the classroom using bulk resources sourced ethically, to develop their ability to live more sustainability. They have also developed meals on a budget looking at a variety of nutritious yet inexpensive meals. Students are currently learning about and making foods from the various cultures represented in their class, as well as learning about Indigenous Australian culture and foods.

The Digital Technology classroom has focused on AI and the future of human employment. Students have considered ethical situations, exploring a range of dilemma scenarios such as AI bias in job selection screening, the power of AI to create fake videos and images of an individual saying and doing things that they did not, use of AI in surveillance situations and the issues of privacy violations and misuse. Students have also developed impressive 3D models using Blender, and 3D scanning software to develop a range of items to display in a virtual art gallery.

Getting the wood chips flying in Design Technology, students have learnt about joining systems such as box joints, mortise and tenon joints, butt joints, housing joints, mitre joints, and dowelled joints to produce several excellent quality items. Coffee tables, boxes and wooden utensils have been moving out the shed door in recent weeks. Students in Year 8 are getting into electrical engineering as they manipulate force and energy to create movement of an electric vehicle. Some brilliant food themed cars are being modelled to be 3D printed and other car chassis designs are being sent to the laser cutter for precise production. Students are enjoying the design challenges and are learning new skills and techniques that will equip them for success in possible engineering employment pathways. Year 10 students enjoyed a tour of the new building recently gaining a greater appreciation of the amount of timber that is required for a roof structure! Thanks to Maveric Builders for the insightful tour. Year 11 Design Production has wrapped up for the year with Josh finishing his replica Ned Kelly helmet and custom stand.

A big thanks to Graeme Young who milled a sassafras log for the school for free and donated a huon pine log that he also milled for us. We look forward to seeing these timbers become beautiful student projects in years to come.

Year 9/10 Exams (Repeat)

Secondary examinations are held this term for students in Years 9-10.  This year, exams will be held Mon-Thurs of Week 6 (20-23 November). The key focus of the examinations is practise in the process of sitting an exam. Students are, therefore, given information to support their exam preparation and study for a limited number of subjects.

Exams can support a student’s final result and even give them a boost to a higher award.  They are not the final determinant of a student’s result and are not designed in this way. In instances where students require additional support or an alternative space, this is provided in consultation with the Learning Enhancement team.

Students have received a digital copy of the exam specifications and timetable. Parents/carers are encouraged to view the attached exam specifications and timetable and check-in with their child to confirm that they have received this information. If further guidance and support is needed, students and parents/carers should firstly contact the teacher setting an exam, Head of Faculty (david.klaver@scc.tas.edu.au (Maths/Science), shayne.Hull@scc.tas.edu.au (Humanities) or todd.barker@scc.tas.edu.au (Executive Coordinator | Head of Secondary).
