Discord

Discord is a free app initially set up to allow gamers to chat to one another while playing games online. Its use has now expanded beyond gaming and is used by different groups to communicate with one another. It's aimed at teens and adults, providing voice, video, or text in either private or public virtual spaces known as servers.

Whilst the age limit is 13+, many students are using it regularly to chat with friends and in some case strangers. There are some safety features you can activate, but the platform is largely unmonitored.
