Multicultural News

What’s been happening in the Multicultural space? This term we celebrated 2 more Pacific Island Language Weeks.

Fijian Language Week (8 – 14 October) Me vakabulabulataki, vakamareqeti, ka vakaqaqacotaki na vosa vakaviti, which means, Nurture, Preserve and Sustain the Fijian language.  As a diaspora population, the language, culture and identity is more important now, than ever before.

Tokelau Language Week (22 – 28 October) This year's theme for Te Vaiaho o te Gagana Tokelau is "Ke Olatia ko ia Tokelau i tana Fakavae - Tokelau to Prosper Within its Foundation”. Understanding the past is crucial for planning the future. While the Tokelauan community may be small in numbers, it is notably big in heart. Acknowledging historical roots is considered essential for future progression, especially in cherishing and upholding the culture and language.

As usual we served some yummy cultural foods and drink during lunch club times and even got the students to test their knowledge with a few literacy and language quizzes.  These are the last Language Weeks for the Year, so I would like to THANK everyone that has been supportive, engaging and most of all has enjoyed the cultural foods throughout the year. It has been a pleasure sharing abit of our Pacific culture and language with our school community. THANK YOU. FAAFETAI LAVA (Samoan) VINAKA (Fijian) MEITAKI (Cook Island) MALO AUPITO (Tongan) FAKAFETAI (Tokelau)
