On Tuesday 18 October, the Unit 4 Theatre Studies class arrived at Box Hill Town Hall with a 3 tonne truck to transport their set and props. For this exam, the students could choose to perform their chosen monologue as an actor/director or present their design ideas for two of the design production roles – set, props, costume, make-up, lighting and sound. They had been working on their monologue since the end of Term 2, through the planning and development stages to presentation stage, and the Exam was the culmination of all their hard work. The class all agreed that the examiners “were really nice” but were relieved when it was finally all over. Congratulations to everyone! Now for the written exam …
Student's said:
'It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. The examiners were really kind and I didn’t mess up as bad as I thought and it was a lot better than the last time I did it.'
'My experience of doing the monologue was quite pleasant, the examiners were so nice. Everything went smoothly and being able to prep in the room before was nice.'
'It was scarier waiting in the waiting room than performing. I actually enjoyed doing it for the panel and it seemed as if they like watching it.'
'The monologue exam was highly stressful but with repeated practice if felt like a relief to perform my best for the examiners.'
A Memorable Experience for our Performing Arts Students
On the evening of Wednesday 18 October, eighty of our dedicated Performing Arts students gathered at Ringwood Station for a cultural excursion to the Princess Theatre in Melbourne's bustling CBD. The purpose of this outing was to see MAMMA MIA! The Musical, a production celebrated for its timeless music by ABBA, and performed by an all-Australian cast.
Throughout the evening, our students were captivated by the infectious energy of the Musical. As the show reached its crescendo, the audience found themselves out of their seats, dancing to the iconic tunes of ABBA, creating a memorable, shared experience.
This immersive excursion not only deepened the students' understanding of the performing arts but also instilled in them a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of music and theatre.
The group was accompanied by Mr. Surya Ganesan, Ms. Evie Ball, Ms. Beryl Birrell, Mr. Lachlan Barratt, and Ms. Michelle Lam. Such experiences play a pivotal role in nurturing the creative spirit and fostering a love for the arts among our students. We are all looking forward to more such engaging and educational initiatives in the future!
Here are some thoughts from students who went on the excursion:
“The show was great. The costumes were incredible. I had a really fun time getting up and dancing with my friends.” - Nyx Main
“The energy was immaculate. I had a lot of fun hanging out with my mates” - Deanna Gerock
“The performers were incredible.” - Kaylee Freeman

Last night, our Year 9/10 Composition and Unit 2 Dance students took to the stage to perform in our Semester 2 Dance Performance Evening. During the evening our audience were treated to various solo, duo and trio Dance works choreographed by the students themselves as part of their assessment. Our Unit 2 students also performed a group work choreographed by Ashleigh Benjamin, that aimed to develop technique and physical skills.
Throughout Terms 3 and 4, students have been working hard to choreograph their own work that aims to communicate a story line or intention.
All students took on the challenge of creating a costume design and working with our fabulous Tech Crew to develop their own lighting. This was a wonderful opportunity for our Dancers to showcase their skills and hard work in front of friends, family and teachers. We all left feeling rather inspired and uplifted.
Special thank you to Mr Andrew Lewis and the Tech Crew for the hours of work dedicated to programming and running the show. Also thank you to the Parents of Performing Arts for assisting in the foyer on the night.
