Athletics

Eastern Metropolitan Region

On Monday 9 October,  forty eight Wantirna College athletes made their way down to Knox Athletics Track to compete in the Eastern Metropolitan Region championships. Congratulations to all students for making it to the EMR round and competing against students from over forty different schools. We had fourteen athletes place in the Top 3, with three progressing onto State.

It was an incredible feat for our students to make it to EMR and they gave each event their best effort. Well done!

State Championships

On Monday 16 October, just one week later, the State Championships were held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. We had three incredible athletes compete against students from all

Government schools across the state. These three students showed outstanding sportsmanship and dedication and did the school very proud. Here are the unbelievable results that they achieved:

Hailey Buckley (Year 10): 1st 100m, 1st 200m, 2nd Long Jump & 3rd Triple jump.

Holly Makaay (Year 9): 6th 800m & 1500m

Noah Palmer (Year 8): 5th Long Jump

Awesome efforts and Go Wantirna!

Cricket Round Robin

On Friday 6 October, a squad of fifteen Year 7s represented Wantirna College in a T10 Cricket Round Robin against local rivals Upwey and Rowville.

Playing in wet conditions and long grass against Upwey at Lewis Park, we elected to bowl first in our first match and used the slow boundary to our advantage. Seven of our bowlers conceded 4 or less across their overs, as we managed to hold Upwey to just 34 runs. Kooper Johnstone was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3/3 across his two overs – all of them clean bowled! Drew Morris was the other wicket taker with 1/2, while Alexander Kokovitis got a run out.

Runs were hard to come by in our first few overs with the bat, but some handy hitting from Joel Gunn (14) kept us in the contest. With five runs to chase in the final over, Alexander and Sashmit Chowdhury managed to keep changing the strike over. Alexander scored a two off the final ball to give us an exhilarating one-run victory.

After a rain break, we returned to the field for our matchup against Rowville, who adjusted to the conditions better than us. Joel Gunn was our only wicket taker, with 1/7 off two overs. Chasing 74, Jordan Peavey (who bravely opened the batting for us in both games) got us off to a positive start with an aggressive 7. As the overs started to run out, we made the decision to rotate our batsmen to give as many players as possible a hit. Alexander (9*) and Joel (7*) were both retired after promising starts, and we finished the innings with 4/30.

Overall, the team participated with great sportsmanship and teamwork, representing Wantirna with pride. Special thanks to Jackson Edwards, Sam Montgomery and Lachlan Payne for running trainings, helping out with umpiring and scoring, and for giving the Year 7s some motivating rev-up speeches!

Sports Excellence Excursion

On Thursday 19 October, the Sports Excellence class head out for the day to consolidate their knowledge of our latest theory content: Physiological Performance Enhancement. Students started the day hiking the 1000 Steps in Ferntree Gully to add some variety into their training program, and to incorporate the use of the environment around us for fitness.

After having morning tea in the sun, we made our way to Axis Performance in Narre Warren where students were able to experience compression garments/boots, Contrast Water Therapy (submersion in hot and ice-cold water) and deep stretching.

It was a great day out where students could learn more about what it looks like to recover like an elite athlete!
