Welcome to Term 2 of Auslan!

For Term 2 start-up we have been doing some revision of Term 1 topics. All grades have been revising basic greetings, colours, fruits (P-6) and vegetables (G1-6), and money and shopping signs (G5-6).

Grade Preps have now started learning some new signs with their new topic on Farm Animals. We are practising the farm animal signs through the song: "Old MacDonald Had a Farm!" and making a mini book over the next few weeks with Farm Animals to sign. There are many new signs we are learning as there are a lot of animal associations that can be made. Your child/ren may remember many or just a few, but I encourage you to ask them to teach you the signs they can recall:

farm, animal, farmer, tractor, cow, bull, sheep, lamb, duck, pig, guinea pig, horse, dog, cat, donkey, kangaroo, mouse, goat, rooster, chicken, bird, snake, lizard, rabbit, goose, frog, and fish.

Grades 1-6 have been learning about Deaf Culture within the deaf community. The signs we are practising in relation to Deaf Culture include: Deaf, hearing, hard of hearing, hearing aid, cochlear, eye-contact, notetaker, communication support worker, interpreter, respect, Auslan, sign language, deaf culture.

Here is some light reading to help you understand some of the things that are important in Deaf Culture. This link just touches the surface and there is so much more to learn and understand, but it is a great starting point:

Another significant part of Deaf Culture is Auslan Day, which the Australian Deaf Community celebrated in the holidays, on Sunday 13th April. This special day is in recognition of the first publication of the Auslan Dictionary by Professor Trevor Johnston who is a child of a deaf adult, on 13th of April 1989.

Auslan Day celebrates the rich history, culture, community and language of the Australian Deaf community by honouring the date of first publication of this Auslan Dictionary.' (https://deafaustralia.org.au/)
