IDAHOBIT Day

On Friday the 16th of May Gisborne Secondary College along with the wellbeing team and students from Pride Crew celebrated IDAHOBIT Day (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia).
Recognised globally, this important day is about celebrating diversity, promoting inclusion, and standing up against discrimination towards LGBTQIA+ people.
At Gisborne Secondary College we are proud to uphold the values of Respect, Innovation, Achievement, and Diversity. IDAHOBIT Day reminds us how essential these values are in creating a school environment where everyone feels safe, supported, and free to be themselves.
Why IDAHOBIT Matters
- Sadly, 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ students still experience verbal or physical abuse at school.
- 1 in 5 transgender or gender-diverse young people feel unsafe in their learning environment.
- When schools take visible action, LGBTQIA+ students are more likely to feel connected, confident, and able to thrive.
What We're Standing For:
- Respect - treating everyone with dignity, regardless of who they are or who they love.
- Diversity - embracing and celebrating all identities and backgrounds in our school community.
- Innovation - leading the way in building inclusive practices and challenging harmful attitudes.
- Achievement - supporting all students to succeed by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment.
We celebrated this important day by holding a 'Flay Raising Ceremony' at recess on the basketball courts. We were joined by a special guest who is a Youth Leader from Way Out - Sunbury Community Health.
