Dijjra - YoungLuv program

On Tuesday 13th May, we had the privilege of welcoming Dijjra to our college to deliver their YoungLuv program—a culturally grounded and empowering workshop designed to support our female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in developing healthy relationships, self-respect, and emotional resilience.

The day began in a traditional yarn circle, where students sat in order from eldest to youngest in their household—an important cultural practice that honours the unique roles siblings play in the family. This created a safe, respectful space where all voices were heard and valued.

Throughout the day, students took part in a range of activities that encouraged reflection, discussion, and connection:

  • In a team challenge, they worked together to identify healthy and unhealthy behaviours in relationships, prompting honest and respectful conversations about what respect, trust, and care really look like.
  • A key part of the day focused on controlling behaviours. Each student selected a behaviour card from a pile, explored why it was considered controlling or unhealthy, and discussed a healthier alternative. These behaviours were then symbolically ripped up and thrown away, representing a collective rejection of toxic patterns.
  • Students also played “Cards Against Passiveness”, Dijjra’s creative take on Cards Against Humanity. This fun and thought-provoking game helped students explore how they could respond to difficult situations and stand up for themselves with strength and confidence.
  • A calming meditation session using hand-painted rocks by respected Elder Aunt Wanda brought a moment of peace and connection to Country.
  • Students designed Self-Love Shields and Cultural Strength Shields, using art as a medium to express pride in their identity, strengths, and values.
  • Important conversations were also had around self-love, support networks, and online cyber safety, providing students with tools to navigate the digital world safely and respectfully.

Students had a great time and were deeply engaged throughout the entire program. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and connection, and left a lasting impact on all who participated.

We are grateful to the Dijjra team for the safe space they created and for the powerful work they continue to do in uplifting and supporting young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. We look forward to future opportunities to partner with them again.
