Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

As we navigate through the year, McCarthy Catholic College continues to be a hub of cultural exploration and community spirit. Term 1 has been a testament to our commitment to fostering inclusivity and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures within our school community.

'Ngaar Wirribiiyaan' Girls Cultural Program - Empowering Strong Young Women

We are thrilled to have continued the 'Ngaar Wirribiiyaan' Girls Cultural Program with Gomeroi Education and Program Manager Aaliyah.

The Program is dedicated to guiding our young women on their cultural, academic, and career journeys. The program aims to empower participants to embrace their cultural identity, offering mentorship for academic and personal growth while fostering community support.

The focus of this term is wellbeing, commencing with connecting with Gamilaraay Language, Ochea Face Masks, and Dance.

NAIDOC Dance Group

This term, we’ve commenced a NAIDOC Dance Group, with Program Coordinator and Mentor Aaliyah from Gomeroi Education and Training. The group explores a deeper connection to culture through movement, aligning with this year’s NAIDOC theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” Students will have the opportunity to showcase their performances at assemblies and other cultural events, celebrating their heritage and the power of cultural expression.

Junior Brother Program

We have continued the Junior Brother Program, designed to build connections and foster a sense of belonging for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys. With the support of mentor Reece, students engage in mentorship, cultural learning, and teamwork, gaining confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of their identity while strengthening their connection to culture and community.

Reconciliation Week 27 May - 3 June

Reconciliation week is a time for all Australians to come together and reflect on our shared history and commitment to a better future. This year’s theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” encourages us to learn from the past while taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. It’s a chance to strengthen relationships, celebrate culture and work together for a more just, inclusive and united Australia.

Communication

We encourage all Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students to join their year group classroom. It is the platform where we communicate cultural opportunities and events. We don’t want students to miss out, so please check regularly and set your notifications to receive an email when an item has been posted.

Please ensure you are currently in your year group classroom. If not, please check your email where classroom codes have been provided.

Celebrating Success

We love recognising the achievements of our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students. If you have a success story to share, please reach out to Jekoya so we can celebrate and showcase these milestones. As we continue our journey, please remember, we are here to support our students and families every step of the way.
