Teaching and Learning update

At Elsternwick Primary School, we are continually working to ensure every student experiences high-quality, evidence-based teaching. This year, we have begun implementing the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0. The VTLM is a refreshed framework from the Department of Education that helps guide consistent, effective teaching practices across Victorian schools.
One important part of this model is the focus on how students retain and use what they’ve learned over time. Not just in one lesson, but across days, weeks, and terms. This is where Daily Review comes in.
What is Daily Review?
Each day, your child starts their day with a short and purposeful session designed to activate their long-term memory. Teachers revisit recent learning—whether it’s a maths strategy, vocabulary from a story, or understanding what we are reading. We give students opportunities to recall, discuss, and apply their knowledge.
This approach is based on strong educational research. We know that regular review helps information move from short-term memory to long-term memory, where it can be more easily retrieved and built upon. In simple terms, the more often children think about something they’ve learned, the more likely they are to remember it.
What does this look like in classrooms?
This daily practice creates strong learning habits and helps students make meaningful connections between ideas and, ultimately ,improving their confidence and academic success.
What’s next?
As we continue to embed the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 across our school, you’ll see this focus on explicit instruction, feedback, and review reflected in your child’s classroom experiences. We're proud to be creating a culture where learning is clear, consistent, and built to last.
