Reading - fostering curiosity and thinking!

As we know reading is a skill for life. When kids like reading, they do more of it and this boosts their reading skills and school success. At StMM’s fostering our student’s reading skills, stamina and love of reading is a key focus each and every day.

Parents often ask teachers how they can help their child improve at school? Fostering a love of reading and literature, develops curiosity and higher order thinking. Advanced thinking skills will help your child in school and in life. When your child builds critical thinking skills, they are able to analyse, critique and evaluate information that they read or hear.

For example, when reading together, ask:

What do you think will happen next?

What do you think about a particular character?

Why do you think the story ended the way it did?

Can you think of a different ending for the story?

How does that make you feel?

Can you retell or summarise the text in your own words?

Why do you think the author chose to include a particular event in the story?

Using the pictures can you create your own story?

Parent Workshop - Supporting your child’s literacy and numeracy development

Staff will be hosting an event for parents to delve deeper into the knowledge and skills our students build during English and Maths. From reading and writing skills to a deeper understanding of numbers in our world, we will share tips and strategies for parents to continue to support their child’s curiosity and love of learning.

Our first parent workshop will be held on Monday 3rd June at 7:00pm-8:30pm. A repeat of this workshop will be Tuesday 4th June at 9:00am-10:30am. We kindly ask parents to register their interest in attending one of the workshops, by completing the google form

We look forward to working with you all as we continue to work together in partnership with all members of our community.

Your opinion is important to us!

We are inviting parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey called Tell Them From Me

The survey is now open and will close for parents on Friday, the 7th of June

We are asking parents in our community to take part in the survey as the online tool will become an important part of St Margaret Mary’s planning process. The information provided will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing.

The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer by using the URL below:

Do you have access to our StMM’s Compass Parent Portal?

It is extremely important for all parents to be able to access the Compass Parent Portal to ensure you are kept up to date with what is happening at St Margaret Mary's. On Compass parents are able to receive information about their child’s attendance, letters sent out by the school and semester reports.

Your child’s Semester One report will only be available for parents to access via the Compass Portal later this term.

If you require assistance in accessing Compass please contact the school office.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming parent workshops.

God Bless

Rochelle
