Week 4 - Junior Sport Update

Well, we finally got to see some sunlight, however it took some time for the ovals and fields to dry out, keeping training on hold for the early part of the week. However, come Saturday, all fields were in playing condition, allowing a full round of Winter sport to be played.

Unfortunately, when the weather receded, the cold and flu season took over. Last weekend saw a number of students and coaches be unavailable due to poor health. This left some teams struggling to get a full team on the field and others without a coach. A big thank you to all the coaches, staff and parents/carers that took on teams to make sure they were managed over the weekend. It is a testament to the College spirit of our community lives.

Despite the reduction in numbers across all codes, the results went strongly in our favour. Of the 32 fixtures played on the weekend, 25 were won by the Junior School (Stage 3). When you throw in a couple of draws, the boys had an 85% success rate across all the codes over the weekend. An exceptional result, considering the limited preparation all teams have had.

As we get close to the halfway point of the term, our attention turns towards the Junior School (Stage 3) Athletics Carnival. Boys wishing to be considered for selection in the Athletics Squad need to sign up for championship events in the 100m and 200m races. The fastest four times in each age group (10s, 11s, and 12s) will be selected into the team. Not only is involvement an opportunity to make the squad, it is also a great way to earn extra points for your team. Championship events are worth more points on carnival day. I would encourage as many boys as possible to sign up.

Not only are running spots available in our squad, high jump, shot put and discus events will also be held. Boys must also sign up for these events and depending on numbers, trials may be required prior to the carnival. Sign-up sheets will be available outside my office for the remainder of the week. I hope to see many names on them.

For parent/carer reference, the Athletics Carnival will be held on Breen Oval on Wednesday 26 June. You are warmly invited to come and support the boys and are asked to sit along the benches along the Fraser Street side of the oval. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to move to the covered seating on the opposite side of the oval as it will be a normal school day for the Senior School and boys will be using those areas for Recess, Lunch and moving between lessons. We look forward to seeing many of you there, cheering the boys on.
