Mathematics

CURRICULUM FOCUS

We are learning about different forms of data collection.

VOCABULARY

Statistics: Statistics is a branch of mathematics. It involves gathering information, summarising it, and deciding what it means. The numbers that result from this work are also called statistics. They can help to predict such things as the weather and how sports teams will perform. They also can describe specific things about large groups of people—for example, the reading level of students, the opinions of voters, or the average weight of a city’s residents.

Data: Data is a collection of information gathered by observations, measurements, research or analysis. They may consist of facts, numbers, names, figures or even description of things. Data is organized in the form of graphs, charts or tables.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

A great way to introduce your child to data is to get out and collect some! They could ask family and/or friends what their shoe size is, how they travel to work or school, favourite food or colour, favourite activity. Ask your child to present their data in a way that is easy to interpret, such as by using a bar graph?
