Year 10 Community Action Reflection Day

Last Tuesday, the Year 10 students travelled to the Holy Cross Centre in Templestowe for their Community Action Reflection Day.

Rachel Prince, our keynote speaker, spoke of the welcome she received as she joined the Academy Community in Year 11 having moved from Sydney with her family. She reflected on how the values of the College and her participation in the Social Justice

activities had played a significant role in her adult formation. Similarly her involvement with the Young Mercy Links post secondary school had given her profound opportunities for growth as a professional artist and then later as a teacher.

The day included workshop presentations from representatives in aged care, the special development schools, the Fitted for Work organisation, Neighbourhood centres and Environmental groups. It is no small thing for

our Year 10 students to leave the relative safety of home life and school life and go out to work in such community organisations. Mercy values will be at the forefront of the tools that the students will need to have a successful experience during their Year 10 Community Action week (June 24 to 28).

Finally, The Year 10 Student Leaders organised a newspaper fashion parade for the afternoon session. Amazing fashion creations comprised of newspaper, ribbon and balloons appeared. Mr Molony, who was able to bring his vast knowledge of the fashion industry to the task of judging the event. In all, a valuable day and a fun day for our Year 10 students.

Year 10 Caritas Incursion - Catholic Social Teachings

In an engaging exploration of Catholic Social Teachings, our Year 10 students recently welcomed a representative from Caritas for an insightful incursion.

Throughout Term 2, our students delved into the six fundamental teachings: Solidarity, The Common Good, Subsidiarity and Participation, Care for our Common Home, Human Dignity, and Preferential Option for the Poor. The incursion provided a platform for students to deepen their understanding, not only by defining these teachings but also by connecting them to scripture and exploring their application in everyday life. It was a meaningful experience, fostering a deeper sense of empathy, responsibility, and community among our students as they strive to embody these teachings in their interactions and decisions.

Sonya Karras- Vaping

We welcomed back Sonya to the Academy again this year to talk to our Year 10 students about Vaping. She provided our students with information on the laws, possible impacts of this behaviour and what to do in social situations around peers vaping.

We look forward to seeing Sonya again in 2025 to talk to our Year 12 and 10 students again.

Susan McLean- Cyber Safety

On Tuesday 14th May Susan McLean returned to the Academy and presented sessions to our Year 9 and an evening session to Year 7 students and parents about cyber safety. Technology continues to be a big part of all of lives and therefore being educated on the laws, safety tips and guidance for both students and parents provides everyone knowledge on how to use technology safely.

If you would like anymore information that Susan McLean spoke about, please go to her website.
