Saby Sebastian Memorial Spelling Contest
Annual Spelling Contest for Sunbury Primary Schools
Every year, the Rotary Club of Sunbury conducts an annual Grade 6 spelling competition - held in memory of their club President. They invite each of the Primary Schools in the Sunbury area to conduct an internal spelling competition to find their school champion. Then in May all these students come together at the Sunbury Football Social Club for a spelling bee to decide the Sunbury Spelling Champion.
The Competition Champion is presented with $600 for their education expenses, a certificate, a trophy and an embroidered polo top by a member of the Rotary Club of Sunbury. The winner’s primary school gets presented with the perpetual trophy for them to display and also receives $500 to support literacy programs in the school. Each of the other students who take part in the Contest receive $100 for their educational expenses, a certificate and an embroidered polo top to mark their achievement.
This year Hayley Elliott from 6B represented Kismet Park Primary School. Hayley did an exceptional job and our community is very proud of her achievements. I was very lucky to check in with Hayley and ask her some questions that are on everyone’s minds!

How old are you? 12 (My birthday was on Tuesday!)

Do you have any tips to assist with spelling? Sound out the words, take your time to think about whether the sound you hear is represented by those letters.
What was the trickiest word you were asked to spell? Colloquialism
What was the event like? It was good, all the schools were put together on a table and we ate our dinner together and we got along really well.
