Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at POPS

"Diversity is a fact. Equity is a choice. Inclusion is an action. Belonging is an outcome." – Arthur Chan

At POPS, we believe every student deserves to feel welcome, safe and supported. When children feel they truly belong, they’re more confident, engaged, and ready to learn.

Diversity is all around us—in culture, language, race, gender, ability, beliefs, family structures and more. Our school community is made richer by these differences, and we believe every student brings something valuable to our shared experience.

Inclusion means more than just being part of the classroom. It’s about making sure all students have equal access to learning and to every part of school life. This includes support for their emotional, social, academic, and physical development through teaching strategies and adjustments that meet individual needs.

At POPS, inclusion is not just a value, it is something we put into practice every day. Here are some examples of inclusion in action:

  • Providing visual schedules and quiet spaces to support students who may feel overwhelmed in busy environments.
  • Using inclusive language and resources in the classroom that reflect diverse family structures, cultures, and abilities.
  • Adjusting activities or assessments to support students with different learning styles or additional needs.
  • Offering buddy programs to help new students or those with social challenges feel more connected and supported.
  • Working with families to develop individual learning plans or strategies that ensure every student can fully participate and thrive.

We believe that:

  • Every student should feel safe, respected and connected at school.
  • Building inclusive classrooms and relationships helps all children thrive.
  • Collaborating with families and the wider community is key to creating a culturally safe and welcoming environment.
  • A diverse and inclusive curriculum helps students understand different perspectives and learn from one another.

By starting with each student’s strengths, interests and goals, we create meaningful learning experiences that support them to succeed—both at school and in life.

We all play a part in building a school where kindness, respect and inclusion are the norm.

On Tuesday night the School Council discussed the Inclusion and Diversity Policy. Please find the document attached. If you have feedback or questions, or would like to discuss it further, please contact Connie Bullen.

Let’s continue working together to make POPS a place where everyone belongs.
