Year 2 News

WHAT’S NEW IN YEAR 2??

Who we are

A balanced lifestyle is influenced by the choices people make.

Our students have enjoyed covering our unit and learning what it means to have a balanced lifestyle. We were proud of our students Maisie, Sam, Zara, Noah, Emily, Jasper, Emi and Alessia who shared our Year 2 PYP overview at Assembly on Monday. Please enjoy the photos and videos of our students being outstanding Risk Takers and Communicators.

Loving Literacy

In literacy, our students have been working hard to become confident and creative writers. They continue to write weekend recounts, building their skills in using time-order words and writing in full sentences. We’ve also been exploring narratives, where students are learning to write stories with a bold beginning, a mighty middle, and an excellent ending

We’re also focusing on writing conventions—such as punctuation, capital letters, and grammar—to make our writing clear and correct. The children have also been learning about common nouns, identifying people, places, and things in their reading and writing. The students have enjoyed completing a variety of activities to identify common nouns.

On Wednesday 21 May our students participated in National Simultaneous Story Time.  Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

This year the chosen picture story book was Truck Cat written by Deborah Frenkel. The Truck Cat is a story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. The Truck Cat is the perfect book to inspire kindness and compassion in young children everywhere.

The students enjoyed making their rocking trucks craft and completing a worksheet titled, ‘Where is Home?’ The students wrote their favourite thing about their home and why it feels like home.

Marvellous Maths in Year 2

Our Year 2 students have been developing their number skills by learning vertical addition. They’ve been practicing how to add two- and three-digit numbers by lining them up neatly in columns, starting with the ones and moving to the tens and hundreds.

The children are learning regrouping when the total is more than ten, and they’re becoming more confident with solving problems step by step. Hands-on activities with place value blocks and whiteboards have made learning both fun and meaningful!

Getting into Graphs

We’ve also been exploring bar graphs—a fantastic way to collect and display data. Students have enjoyed conducting surveys, such as finding out the class’s favourite fruit or sport and then creating bar graphs to show their results. They’ve been learning to read the graphs carefully, label the axes, and interpret what the data tells us. This has helped build their skills in organising information and thinking critically about numbers.

Speaking and Listening Learning Task

Last week the students completed their Speaking and Listening learning task on a variety of sports including, Badminton, Sport climbing, Surfing, Baseball, Equestrian and Karate. The students were given a fact sheet which they highlighted information such as equipment needed, clothes worn and rules of the game.

We also incorporated Maths into this task as the students ask their classmates a specific question about their sport and tallied the results and reported their findings as part of their presentation. They then created cue cards containing this information.

Presentations

The students were assessed on their voice projection, eye contact, cue cards and talk content. We were extremely proud of the students being risk takers and communicators during their presentations.
