Year 1 News

We've had a wonderfully busy few weeks in Year One, packed with hands-on learning and fun discoveries. Here's a peek at some of the amazing things we've been up to!Ā
š± Bean SproutingĀ
We have continued to explore how beans grow. Following on from our Germination Stations where the students carefully germinated bean seeds by placing them in damp paper towels and hanging them on the windows we were able to watch their seeds begin to sprout roots and shoots. The students then planted them in soil and have been keeping a close eye on them ever since.Ā

The children love checking their beans each day and recording the changes they are observing daily. As part of our maths lessons on measurement the students have been measuring the growth of their bean plant and recording which plant is the longest and which plant is the shortest.Ā Ā
š Battle of the Burgers!Ā
This had been one of our most exciting (and slightly gross!) experiments. We have now been observing the changes present in both our homemade and McDonald's burger which have been left sealed in containers for 5 weeks now.Ā
Ā
Ā
During this time, we have observed many interesting changes. Letās just say ā not all burgers break down the same way! This fun project has sparked many great conversations about food, preservatives, and healthy eating.Ā Ā

š Literacy Fun ā Suffixes and Spelling!Ā
In Literacy, we've been diving into suffixes and building our vocabulary. We explored how words can change when we add endings like -ed, -ing, and -es, and used our spelling words in creative writing and during word work games. The children loved making "word families" and playing matching games with root words and their suffixes. Itās been wonderful to see their confidence grow as readers and writers!Ā
On Monday the Year 1 students presented at our Whole School Assembly. We are so proud of all the curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking our Year One learners have shown thus far in our Unit of Inquiry.Ā Ā
