FOUNDATION NEWS

We had a fun and busy week in Foundation, filled with creativity, learning, and thoughtful moments!

As writers, we responded to the beautiful book Thunderstorm Dancing by Judy Watson, by writing about our favourite part of the story. We also learned about the Aboriginal flag, it’s colours and their meanings and wrote sentences to describe what the colours represent. To build our writing skills, we are continuing to focus on being successful writers by practising how to attempt one or more sentences, use finger spaces, sound out words and include all the sounds we can hear in a word, particularly the initial sounds. We also completed weekend recounts, sharing special moments from home and building our oral and written language skills.

As mathematicians, we are continuing to explore the concept of Part-Part-Whole. We are learning how whole numbers can be made from two smaller numbers (eg. 7 and 3 make 10, 2 and 3 make 5). As thinkers, we used hands-on materials and visuals to show different combinations, developing a strong sense of number relationships.

Throughout TRP, we’ve continued exploring our GEM values - Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness. This week, we focused on the value of Mindfulness-being present and tuning into the world around us. We practised slowing down, noticing our surroundings, and using our senses to become more mindful. One of the highlights of the week was making elephant ears! We then used these to go on a sound walk and explore all the different noises we could hear in the classroom and outside. It was a fun and engaging way to connect with the world around us through careful listening.

We continue to practise mindfulness and have regular GEM Chats each day to help embed these important habits into our daily routine. Here is a GEM chat you may like to try at home: "What’s something you noticed today that made you feel calm or happy?"

What are we learning this week….

  • Numeracy: We will continue learning how to break numbers from 0 to 10 into parts and put them back together using part-part-whole models to build number sense.
  • Reading: Revision of sounds, stretching out words, using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words and sentences. (m,s,t,a,p,i,f,r,c,o)
  • Writing: Writing about our experiences and about texts we have read- recording different sounds we can hear in words, sight words, and using spaces and full stops
  • Inquiry: Finding out more about our cultures and stories
  • Religion: Connecting the Sacrament of Eucharist to the Scripture story ‘Road to Emmaus’
  • The Resilience Project: Mindfulness

Thank you for your continued support at home. We are so proud of the progress and positive attitude our Foundation students continue to show each day!

Warm wishes,

Foundation Team - Alycia, Leanne and Olivia

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

Welcome to Week 6! We are just over the halfway mark and super excited for the week ahead!

Last week, we participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, 2025. Along with the 2,204,698 others who tuned in, we listened to the picture storybook called, “The Truck Cat”, read aloud by the author Deborah Frenkel, together with the illustrator Danny Snell. This is the 25th successful year of this event that promotes the value of reading and literacy through the use of Australian picture books.

As readers, we are continuing to explore the genres, fiction and non-fiction to develop good reading behaviours by practicing skills such as reading with fluency, segmenting and blending (breaking up words into parts), and re-reading for meaning. We have also been focusing on building our comprehension skills by answering questions after reading a text, locating specific information and summarising.

Thank-you to all families who supported their child in conducting an interview with a family member to find out about their own culture! The children had the opportunity to prepare for this interview by considering the skills of a good interviewer. They were super excited to share their discoveries with their peers when they had returned to school. As researchers, this week they will continue to explore culture by visiting the Museum of Chinese Australian History.  We are currently considering questions that we might ask the experts and ways to stay safe whilst we are there.

Reminders for the excursion this week - Thursday 29th of May:

Students will be departing school at approximately 9:15am on the bus and arriving back at school at approximately 2:30pm

On the day, students will be required to wear their sports uniform and bring the following:

  • A small backpack- large enough to fit their food and drink bottle
  • Students are asked to bring their brain food, recess and lunch in their backpacks - encourage no single-use packaging.
  • Drink bottle- clearly labeled with student’s name

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

As members of a faith community, we gathered together as a year level to commence our Eucharist celebrations. Thank you to our wonderful readers, Asha, Maria, Jacob and Sebastian S, for sharing the prayers of the faithful with us. Thank you Zara and Florence for bringing the bread and wine to the altar.

Our Year 4 students participated in their Eucharist Retreat Day facilitated by Ms Gasbarro. On this day students reflected on the Sacrament of the Eucharist and what it means for them. Thank you Ms Gasbarro!

Sustainability

As members of our school community, we gathered in Saunders Yard to check-in on the plants we planted last week. Our garden is now growing kiwi trees, a passionfruit tree, a lemon tree, cabbage, beetroot, cauliflower and various herbs. Each week we are responsible for watering our plants, removing weeds and ensuring they are looked after.

Upcoming Assembly

Year 3/4BP will be hosting assembly this Friday in recognition of Reconciliation Week. All are welcome to attend.
