Model UN Conference

Model UN Conference 2025

Last Friday a group of 5 GEC students (Ebony Guy, Ellen Kompogiorga Ella Foreman, Kristian Piasecki and Shresta Pulaparthi), participated in the Model United Nations Conference at McKinnon Secondary College.

The aim of our day was to represent a country, in our case Madagascar, and debate or discuss our country’s environmental problems and needs with other groups of young students like us. The goal of the day was to debate the UN’s 17 goals relating to sustainable development and climate action.

I gave a speech, created with my team, about the devastating impact of climate change and why Madagascar urgently needs the help of the global community to address its problems as well as create a better quality of life, future for the people and the unique environment there.

It was a really inspirational experience since it really helped me with my public speaking. Giving a speech in front of over a hundred of my peers was really shocking and nerve racking at first but when I went up to talk I felt really confident thanks to the help of my group and teacher. I learned a lot from this experience about teamwork, friendship as well as knowledge about the workings of the UN and how it makes the world a better and safer place.

Thanks to Ms Fisher and Ms Mattsson for supporting us through this experience. I encourage anyone who is interested to have a go next year and get involved in making the world a better place through cooperation, sharing ideas and goals.
