Winter Festival

As the Winter Festival approaches, our community has been preparing. In the lead-up, we’ve been making candles—each tiny flame a symbol of the inner light that shines brightly through the stillness of winter.

The festival celebrates the winter solstice, the longest night of the year—a time to pause, reflect, and honour the quiet turning of the seasons. Children have created and decorated beautiful lanterns, each one a glowing expression of warmth and creativity.

The evening begins with our community gathering to watch each class present their unique expression of the longest night. Parents are then invited to walk the spiral while the children sing. Afterward, the children walk the spiral themselves.

Walking the spiral is a meditative journey—an inward movement that reflects the quiet contraction of winter, followed by the outward path representing the return of the light and the lengthening days to come.

The night concludes with warm potatoes for everyone and a contemplative, peaceful mood as we carry the warmth of the evening with us.

I look forward to sharing this special experience with you at the Cassia Winter Festival on Friday next week, and at the Primary School Festival on Thursday the following week, 19th June, at 5:45pm. Feel free to bring your own lantern with a theme of candlelight.
