Year 5 & 6

Around our level

The 5/6 students participated in activities for Reconciliation Week. We commenced with acknowledging Sorry Day on Monday 26th May and then moved to a variety of activities that enabled students to learn and celebrate the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians. It involved respecting other cultures, understanding fairness and inclusion and how we can all work together to build a better future. It was a chance for students to learn, talk, and take part in activities that help bring everyone closer together in understanding and friendship.

A big highlight over the last fortnight was interschool sport. Due to the long weekend the students only had an opportunity to write about playing against Our Lady’s Primary School.

5/6A

On Friday I played netball and we went to Our Lady’s. We tried our hardest to win and be kind. We were kind but we lost. That is okay. We made some friends. I made friends with this girl called Sarah. Their team was really good so Yarra Road  are going to try harder next week.

On Friday we had interschool sport. Interschool sport was hard. I did netball. We lost but I played well and so did the team.

Interschool sport: Last week we went to the oval to play AFL 9s. We won the game 58 - 20 and they were great sports . I scored 1 goal and 1 behind. I am looking forward to this Friday to have another fun game.

Last week was National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. We learnt about all the hurt that was inflicted upon the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We learnt about the Indigenous children who were taken away from their families and were placed in homes with other Indigenous children. We also read a poem about National Sorry Day. I now know that Reconciliation Week is all about acknowledging events of the past and bridging towards a new future.

Asfor Interschool Sport, it was so much fun! I play volleybounce with Mrs Haysom, and the first school we played against was Our Lady’s. We played three sets, the first we one we lost, the second one we also lost, but the third one we won. I can't remember the exact scores, but it was all about having fun! Overall, I think we had a great game, and I think that our Volleybounce team represented Yarra Road very well! I look forward to our next game!

I learnt from Reconciliation Week that you should always apologize for something that you did wrong. You may have hurt someone’s feelings and they need to know that you are sorry.

For interschool sport I played netball. I thought it was really fun but it was also hard at first but overall it was good.

- Victoria C

I learnt that I'm actually good at soccer and I'm proud of myself.

Reconciliation Week was the best. It is good that people are realising that we can celebrate coming together and we should appreciate everyone.

I had a lot of fun at interschool sport. My team played really well for our first ever game playing together. There were some people that had never played before and they did amazing. Our team was really good at passing and working together. Although we lost 13 to 3 and had to cut the game a bit short, our team tried hard.

- Myla J

Interschool sport was good. I played footy and we won. The scores were 21 to 58. It was fun and very enjoyable.

5/6C

I played netball for interschool sport. I play in the mixed team. My coach is Will's mum. We played against Our Lady’s. It was a pretty close game. We lost 21-16. Most of their team played basketball. I was a gd twice and a gk once. I really enjoyed playing interschool sport.

- Chloe B

Reconciliation Week is reminding everyone to treat people fairly and equally and not being mean to people because they may look different.

- Ada D

In interschool sport I learnt that you should always try your best and don't give up no matter what and be yourself.

- Jai F

Interschool sport was super exciting! I'm on the netball mixed team and we had a very exciting game against Our Lady’s. In the first 2 quarters it was up and down we were often down by a point or tied. In the third quarter we started to take the lead ahead of them. But in the last quarter they ended up pulling ahead and taking the win. We lost by five points and the scores were 21-16

- Aisha R

I've learnt a lot about Sorry Day and the Aboriginal culture with all the different projects we created. I feel like we got to have fun and learn all together.

Interschool sport was so much fun. We may not have won but we tried our best and it was so fun bonding with my friends and getting closer with people I'm not usually friends with. My team and I played vollybounce against Our Lady's Primary School. It was fun getting out there and playing and supporting my team. So overall Interschool Sport and Reconciliation Week were super fun.
