Year 3 & 4

Around our level

In Years 3 and 4, over the last couple of weeks, students have been learning about the importance of Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day as part of their Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum. They explored the significance of these events in acknowledging the history and ongoing impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students engaged in discussions about the Stolen Generations and the meaning of saying "sorry" in a national context. In our classes, we read texts, watched videos, and shared reflections on how we can all contribute to reconciliation through respect, understanding, and truth-telling. As part of their learning, students completed an activity mat and created artwork with paper strips, including important words about reconciliation. These activities helped students build empathy and deepen their understanding of Australia’s shared history.

Reconciliation is all coming together and showing us that it’s good to forgive others. We learnt about Sorry Day and read a book. We also did a fun worksheet where we looked at words about Reconciliation.

- Lylah K (3/4A)

Reconciliation is about coming together as a nation and saying sorry to the Aboriginal people for taking their land. In class we made strips of paper with important words such as respect, belonging, action and what these mean.
