Grade 4 News

During these past two weeks in Literacy, we have worked at putting together a factual recount, with a focus on the impact of white settlement on our First Nations People.

In order to do this, we have read about the loss of land, culture and family that many of the First Australians endured.

We mark Reconciliation Week next week and I believe that the Year 4 students will have a greater understanding of the importance of this time and the meaning of the theme for this year, ‘Bridging Now to Next.’

We continue to have a very good reading at home practise amongst the Year 4 students. Ms Evans and I are absolutely thrilled at the reading habits of the students this year and would like to congratulate and thank our parents for encouraging this fabulous habit in your child.

““The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”

In Maths, we are working in the area of measurement.

We have measured and calculated the perimeter of objects and are now working on ‘area’. We use the language of boundary for perimeter and ‘the space covered’ for area.

Our Religious Education unit has us thinking about the impact of the Holy Spirit, which typically doesn’t get much of a look in, as Jesus and God are often our focus.

Today the students heard the story of Pentecost and then several students sat in the ‘Interview Chair’ and took on the role of one of the people that were there that day.  It was fascinating to hear one student ask of one of their mates pretending to be an apostle who was there, “Were you happy and sad when this happened?’  Unsure of what they meant, the child explained, that he must have been happy that the presence of Jesus was back but sad that it wasn’t Jesus himself.” I thought this was a thoughtful comment and I made the connection that this is what we have to work with today, which can be still as powerful but not quite the same.

The Fun Run is getting closer, with many counting down the days.

It should be a great St Bernard’s community event.
