Teaching and Learning: Summative Assessment
Over the next few weeks, students at SEPS will complete a range of summative assessments as part of our mid-year reporting process. These assessments help teachers identify what students currently know, understand and can do across key learning areas. It also gives us a chance to reflect on the impact of our teaching processes.
Assessment is not just about reporting achievement. The information we gather will also support teachers to plan for Term 3 by identifying areas of strength, areas for further development and the next steps in learning for individuals, small groups and whole classes.
Our students will also use assessment information to reflect on their progress and, with support from their teachers, set meaningful learning goals. This helps ensure that learning remains targeted, purposeful and responsive to student needs.
We encourage families to view assessment as one part of the learning journey. It provides valuable information that helps teachers celebrate growth, plan effectively and continue supporting every student to make progress.
As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening early numeracy learning, SEPS has been selected to participate in the Year 1 Numeracy Check Pilot, run by the Department of Education. The screening tool, developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is designed to be easily administered in classroom settings and will help us identify students who may be at risk in numeracy early in their schooling. Through the pilot, our staff will have access to professional learning, online support and guidance materials, and will be supported to analyse the reports generated by the check. This information will help us better understand each student’s numeracy development and plan targeted teaching and support to ensure every child continues to grow in confidence and capability as a mathematician.
