Hello Level 1 families,
Can you believe we are nearly halfway through the year? The students have been working very hard across all areas of the curriculum and are making some fantastic progress. We love seeing the enthusiasm and effort going into homework to help reinforce the learning we do at school.
Take home books will continue to be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays this term.
Homework will continue this term. Today, if your child returned their homework book, they would have received their second Term 2 homework matrix. This will be due back in two weeks time.
National Reconciliation Week is coming up (27th May - 3rd June). We will be reading books and having discussions on this topic and we encourage you to have conversations at home to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.
Werribee Zoo excursion: Please ensure you have given permission and paid via Compass for our excursion on Thursday 11th June.

Over the coming fortnight, students will explore the mentor text 'Honestly, Red Riding Hood was Rotten!' which is the classic fairy tale told from the perspective of the wolf. We will be unpacking the characters and plots, as well as morals of the story.
We are learning to:
Our daily Core Literacy lessons include many English components including handwriting, dictation, card deck, making words with letters and their sounds, reading words and texts and comprehension.
It is also a time when we incorporate the student text book, Spelling Mastery, twice a week into our lessons to revise sounds, letter names, spelling rules and the reading and spelling of words.
Here's what we will be focusing on at the beginning of Term 2:
Heart Words - review of should, would, could
- want, what, where
Morphology - suffix -er and review of the FLOSS Concept

In Week 4, students reviewed time concepts such as days of the week and months of the year and how days, weeks, months and years are connected. We reviewed ordinal numbers and looking at calendars to find dates, days and discover how many days are in each month.
You can help consolidate this learning at home by looking at your family calendar and asking questions such as 'how many days are in May?' and 'what day of the week is the 28th of May?'
Over the next fortnight, students will be focusing on duration of events, as well as making amounts in money by using our skip counting knowledge. We will also be learning the properties of 3D shapes.
At home, perhaps you can ask your child to count up any coins you have around the house and put them into piles of $1 (we have been skip counting by 5s and 10s). You could also go on a 3D shape hunt around your house, garden or local park.
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be introducing the continents of Asia and Europe using a map and some key features and landmarks such as pandas and Mount Everest in the Himalayas as well as the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben. Students will learn about some countries that are located within these continents.
We hope you have a wonderful two weeks ahead. As always, if you have any questions about the learning or your child, please don't hesitate to organise a time to speak to us.
Warm Regards,
The Level 1 Team
