Grade 5 - 6
In the coming weeks the grade 5’s will have a strong focus towards NAPLAN preparation and ensuring that the students are ready for the NAPLAN process that will commence in week 7. Parts of this process include:
Writing
This term as a cohort, we are focused on sentence structures, mainly simple, compound and complex sentences and how best to use them in our writing. Students have been provided the opportunities to practise this as well as develop their writing through persuasive texts, and moving forward for the next fortnight, will have the chance to practise whilst writing their own narrative.
Reading
Over the last few weeks, both Grade 5 and 6 have focused on ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ and ‘The Fire Wombat’, two texts that promote a rich discussion and provide multiple opportunities for students to engage and develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills. With our implementation of fluency pairs, students get the chance everyday to practise their fluency and word pronunciation, getting real time feedback from their peers. The ability afterwards to delve into developing their comprehension abilities and discussing with others provides key learning for all.
Maths
Students have had a focus of developing their ‘Number and Place Value’ skills, primarily focusing on place value and the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). So far, students have had the opportunity to practise the process of each operation and then apply this in both isolation and in problem solving. Students will focus on this for the entirety of the term.
Camp
As mentioned in our last 5/6 newsletter,
- Grade 5’s will venture out to Camp Rumbug for a 3 day camp on Monday 22nd April until Wednesday 24th April, bookings are now open for this camp and close Tuesday 12th of March.
- Grade 6’s will head on down to Forest Edge Camp in term 4 for a 4 day camp commencing Tuesday 22nd of October through until Friday 25th October - bookings for this camp will open at the end of term 2. Please note that all camps, events and excursions are accessible through COMPASS.
Grade 6-7 Transition
This week for Grade 6 families only, your child was provided a Student Enrolment Information Form which needs to be checked carefully, signed and returned to your child’s classroom teacher to begin the Grade 6 to Year 7 enrolment process. More information will be provided when necessary through Compass.
Let’s Talk Swinburne Study
Students from 5A and 6B were selected to participate in the Let’s Talk Swinburne Study, parents had the opportunity to have their child participate in the study. This week the students attended a student learning day all about the Let’s Talk program. These students learnt all about the program and how by talking to others in the playground can allow for everyone to have the ability to - Letting Everyone Talk Safely. They learnt that by being seen, heard and valued it can change the way a student feels about themselves. These students will continue throughout the year completing activities and further learning to help develop their ability to be peer leaders within the Grayling Primary School community.
