Grade 4

Reading

Over the past few weeks in reading, students have been exploring multiple mentor texts and engaging in many reading skills. Students have strengthened their understandings of ‘Patches Lost and Found’ and ‘Sad, the Dog’ by engaging in predicting, visualising, questioning and inferring. We had a big focus on making inferences as this has been a tricky skill to master in the past couple of weeks! Students have made observations and used prior knowledge to make inferences about the characters traits and feelings to gain a deeper understanding of the characters.

Writing

To start the year, we have had a strong focus on the basics of writing, examining basic sentence structures.   Students have refreshed their memory about FANBOYS and used these coordinating conjunctions to create some excellent compound sentences. We have also looked at several subordinating conjunctions (Before, After If, When, Since, Although) and practiced writing some trickier complex sentences.  This week we have begun to look at narratives, including their basic structure and how we can get ideas to begin planning our very own! 

Maths

To begin the year in grade 4, we have been learning about place value. Students have been investigating how numbers are formed based on the digits in the number. We have started with this as it is vital to understanding many mathematical concepts such as addition and subtraction, which we have just started learning mental strategies for.

Integrated

So far this Term, the students have been learning about the symbols, emblems and celebrations of Australia. They have seen how we represent Australia in different ways. The year 4’s are now able to tell the differences between emblems and symbols.

Respectful Relationships

In Respectful relationships, the years 4’s have been looking at emotions. We are discussing what emotions are, how they can be triggered, and how we can keep our emotions contained during 

Chromebooks

The grade 4’s have been having fun with the Chromebook sessions so far. They have learnt some new skills including, how to make a Google doc, change the font style, colour and size. They have also learned how to insert a picture. Google slides have also been looked at this fortnight, they have also looked at how to upload their work to Google classroom. Typing will be a big focus for us in the coming weeks.
